I'm an American breakfast connoisseur. Have had and enjoyed both hash browns and fried bread, both here and in the UK. The difference is, hash browns have higher variance depending on how good the cook is. Average fried bread beats poorly-made or average hash browns, but really well-made hash browns clobber the best fried bread. The big variable is whether the cook is skilled enough to actually brown the hash browns. Made properly, they should have a crunchy, caramelized exterior crust. This will not happen if the cook is unskilled or in a hurry or the grill isn't hot enough. I wouldn't be surprised if it's very difficult to find really good hash browns in England, since they're not uniformly well made even in the U.S. And - sorry, but it's true, I've eaten in workingman's cafes - the skill level of English fry cooks averages lower. The difference isn't large, but it's noticeable to an American. On the other hand, I miss clotted cream on scones. We could stand to import and naturalize that.

A proper full English breakfast should contain fried bread rather than hash browns.

Relistening to this Led Zeppelin masterpiece reminds me that its an extremely clear example of an underappreciated technique they brought to rock music: systematic use of extreme dynamic contrasts. Listen to the way that the soft solo keyboard sections both create a dreamy, mystical atmosphere and build inexorable tension to be resolved when the guitars and drums crash in. There may have been isolated instances of this before 1969, but the Zep was the first band to make this kind of contrast part of their signature sound. Alas, it's not a technique still used much. Modern pop music is crowded and noisy and almost never willing to let thematic ideas breathe and develop through contrasts like these. I know it's going to seem like I'm engagement-baiting here, but I would be interested to read comments about peoples' favorite examples of this kind of move, anywhere in rock music.
Rock'n Roll of All@rocknrollofall

'Close the door, put out the light You know they won't be home tonight The snow falls hard and don't you know The winds of Thor are blowing cold' Some of the most haunted lyrics that has ever been written is hidden in Led Zeppelin's No Quarter. The song was written by John Paul Jones, Jimmy Page, and Robert Plant. The song became a centerpiece at all Led Zeppelin concerts thereafter, until their final tour. The title of the song is said to be derived from the military practice of showing no mercy to a vanquished opponent and from the brave act of not asking for mercy when vanquished. This theme is captured in several of the song's lyrics. Like "Immigrant Song" two albums prior, it evokes imagery from the Vikings and Norse mythology, with lyrics such as “the winds of Thor are blowing cold. Led Zeppelin performing 'No Quarter' live at Madison Square Garden, in 1973.

@933WMMR This is terrible. When I first heard Pierre I laughed at him, I thought his performance was a put-on. But the more I listened, the more I loved. He was genuinely what he portrayed on air. Authentic. I only got to meet him twice, he was warm and friendly both times.

Though I generally hate reboots and remakes, I guess somewhere, deep, deep at the bottom of the barrel, someone may rediscover Axe Cop, and personally, I'd go all in on bean-mouth, Adventure Time knock-off, transgender preeaching, ambiguously brown Axe Cop to feed my family. In fact, I wouldn't even have it be written by a 5-year-old, I'd have it be written by a mob of 29-year-olds in the Burnside area of Portland with purple hair. cityweekly.net/utah/true-tv-c…

Sorry for the massive scare I gave everyone with HASTE last night, it was a very random and unknown launch that ultimately was NOT HASTE but was a sounding rocket. Will be sure to dig a little more into something like that in the future!
