@chucktowngent @wil_da_beast630 Just cuz one could commit a crime more effectively doesn’t make what they actually did legal. Your arguments are wild & not worth the time given the fact that over 50 million Americans (like me) saw it in real time. Stop trying to tell me rain isn’t wet cuz the ocean is wetter.

@JoeCohnYLS @wil_da_beast630 Imagine just 10% of the crowd outside that day bringing their guns. Over 5000 armed insurgents. They could have killed every federal employee on Capitol Hill and burnt the city to the ground, and no force on earth could have stopped them. THAT would have been an insurrection…

Janaaaaaaaaaaaannnnnuary 6th, The Darkest Day of All Time, was in reality far less serious than the 750+ BLM riots. These weren't small affairs, far from big cities and the halls of power. Rioters set up a city state ("CHAZ") in the literal Capitol District of Seattle. An ex-mutual of mine became an Armalite toting warlord. 7 (?) people died there. Rioters sacked the Mag Mile in Chicago, and fought feds for 120 days in Portland. AN ACTIVE POLICE STATION WAS BURNED DOWN, after a medieval street battle, in Minneapolis. 35 people died; $2B in damage was done. All this would be presented as - per trained AI - 5-30x J6 were the parties reversed. Just a reminder.

I had a dream. That everyone was polite to each other on X. That everyone argued their points based on facts & logic. That when people got something wrong, they'd acknowledge it immediately. That the post that raised to the top were thoughtful. That's when I woke up. What a nightmare.

@PPMcduggan @dewb666 @mattyglesias @mattduss Gaza & the WB are actual apartheid jurisdictions, considering the total lack of rights of women. And let’s not pretend a Jew could have walked down the street in Gaza from 05-2023 without being murdered. In Israel 2 million Arabs have equal rights. Sure Israel is the colonizer?

@chucktowngent @wil_da_beast630 Yes it is insane for the VP to do that. And that is why he refused. And the President spent weeks telling him he could and should. J6 was insurrectionists threatening him if he did not do so. It was an insane plan. But it was their plan.

@JoeCohnYLS @wil_da_beast630 You literally act like the VP can just pick whatever electors they want and the single-handedly decide who the next president is. It’s freaking insane. You can say J6 was violent. When you act like it could’ve done anything, it’s just pathetic.

@DBistoli @mattyglesias Sure. I was just providing an example where moderation is not about finding issues where you are willing to break with your side to join the other side. Sometimes it is really a more straightforward issue of degrees.

Okay but this is exactly the point — what do you call a Democrat who rather than being a down-the-line progressive appeals to voters who have a less cohesive ideology? That’s a moderate, right? Someone who breaks with the left on some salient issues.

@mattyglesias It’s not only about terminology. Sometimes the difference with moderation vs extremism is one of degree & not siding with the other party. Replacing cops with social workers is an example. One extreme would replace all. One would replace none. A moderate might replace some.

If this is sincerely just a hangup about the word “moderate” I am not wedded to it. Rather than moderates, Democrats could nominate schmoderates who align with popular progressive views but are heterodox on other topics where conservatives are more popular.

@mattyglesias @ZeeshanAleem Induced more by 20+years of propaganda unchecked, general distaste for large scale wars, and a deeply unpopular President that is generally pro-Israel. But I agree Mamdani is a beneficiary of the shift and not the cause.

@ZeeshanAleem I don’t think Mamdani is why public opinion on Israel shifted, he was the beneficiary of a shift induced by events in the Middle East.

The politics of Israel didn’t just break in his favor, he *made* them break in his favor by fighting for & clarifying the distinction between anti-Zionism & antisemitism. That’s something popularism isn’t able to compute as a theory of politics, because it forecloses persuasion.
Matthew Yglesias@mattyglesias

@RossBarkan That’s fair. Mamdani definitely did better than I expected and the politics of Israel have broken sharply in his favor. I still think the discourse should pay less attention to New York City and more to reddish states and districts.

@chucktowngent @wil_da_beast630 That is not how crime works. Attempted murder is attempted murder even if you are so incompetent you had little chance to succeed. A failed coo is a failed coo. Insurrectionists were hoping to intimidate the VP to get him to replace the electors.

@JoeCohnYLS @wil_da_beast630 You didn’t answer the question. Let’s say it was even 5 times more violent than it was. It’s completely unrealistic to claim that anything would’ve resulted in changing the election results. That is the crux of your argument - and it is nonsensical.

@astronmr20 @wil_da_beast630 That is all awful behavior that should be prosecuted to the fullest extent. But it is not an insurrection unless you are trying to overthrow the government or stop peaceful transition of power from a current administration to its elected successor. Words have meanings.

@JoeCohnYLS @wil_da_beast630 In a major US city. The left kicked out police, occupied the police station, set fires, and established armed checkpoints patrolled each night with rifles. Two innocent black teens were killed as a result (CHAZ) THAT is an insurrection. Not unarmed trespassers on J6

@chucktowngent @wil_da_beast630 We witnessed the violence. Why are you even trying to argue when literally millions of people watched it in real time? Multiple convictions in federal court that were the result of trials and not plea bargains. There is drinking the kool aid and there is drinking the kool aid.

@JoeCohnYLS @wil_da_beast630 How? Explain how people entering that capitol would have done jack. The Capitol police were armed. Were they gonna destroy the ballots? Most were allowed in. A few broke windows. What you say would only make sense if they showed up with guns and burnt the city to the ground.
