Many colleagues in the fields of #AI governance and #HumanRights follow the journey of Canada's Artificial Intelligence and Data Act (AIDA). I review the proposed amendments to the bill in a new @CIGIonline paper:
cigionline.org/articles/propo…
The amendments adopt many provisions from EU's #AIAct, including the requirement to publish training data, report incidents, and watermark AI-generated content. Yet the governance model outlined in this document isn’t significantly different from the bill’s original vision, essentially that AI vendors should be allowed to police themselves. The amendments provide no mechanisms of redress for citizens whose rights and lives will be affected by AI technologies. The new office of the AI and data commissioner is limited to functioning as a liaison between Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED) and the AI industry.

Our Senior Policy Analyst, @JoeMasoodi joins Newstalk 1010 to discuss the effectiveness of CCTV cameras on public safety.
While CCTV can help reduce property or vehicle crimes, it is not statistically effective in reducing violent crime.

Winnipeg police is buying video analysis software. Excellent reporting by @EdwardDjan1. Province is funding the purchase. Good points by Kevin Walby @uwinnipeg. I talk about tech regulatory environment being lax, and how efforts like AIDA fall short.

The inclusive state has emerged as a byproduct of earlier neoliberal policies and the issues they have given rise to today. Another good talking point by @yasmeenabulaban at #ICPP6 @TorontoMet

Good talking points by Chris Ansell, @UCBerkeley, at #IPPC6 @TorontoMet, on the inclusive state: If the state is sincere in being inclusive, it needs to create the environment that welcomes groups to meaningfully participate.
