Using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), astronomers have detected dimethyl sulfide (DMS) in the atmosphere of K2-18b, a super-Earth exoplanet 124 light-years away in the constellation Leo. On Earth, DMS is produced almost exclusively by living organisms—chiefly marine phytoplankton and other microscopic life in the oceans. No known non-biological process reliably generates it in significant quantities. K2-18b is a Hycean world: roughly 2.6 times Earth's radius, enveloped in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere, and likely covered by a global ocean beneath a thick haze layer. It orbits in the habitable zone of its cool red-dwarf star, where liquid water could exist on the surface. The new JWST observations (NIRISS and NIRSpec instruments) reveal DMS at a high confidence level (>3σ), alongside confirmed methane (CH₄) and carbon dioxide (CO₂)—gases that, together, align with models of a water-world biosphere. Earlier 2023 data had already hinted at these biosignature gases, but the latest DMS detection marks the most compelling clue so far. Researchers stress caution: while no abiotic explanation for DMS has been convincingly identified in this context, exotic chemistry (e.g., photochemical or volcanic processes) cannot yet be fully ruled out. The signal remains tentative until confirmed by additional observations. Follow-up JWST time has already been allocated to re-observe K2-18b and hunt for corroborating signs, which could elevate this from a tantalizing hint to a landmark in astrobiology. the war has begun... the U.S. department of defense (pentagon) has classified anthropic as a potential risk within its supply chain
Secretary of War Pete Hegseth@SecWar

This week, Anthropic delivered a master class in arrogance and betrayal as well as a textbook case of how not to do business with the United States Government or the Pentagon. Our position has never wavered and will never waver: the Department of War must have full, unrestricted access to Anthropic’s models for every LAWFUL purpose in defense of the Republic. Instead, @AnthropicAI and its CEO @DarioAmodei, have chosen duplicity. Cloaked in the sanctimonious rhetoric of “effective altruism,” they have attempted to strong-arm the United States military into submission - a cowardly act of corporate virtue-signaling that places Silicon Valley ideology above American lives. The Terms of Service of Anthropic’s defective altruism will never outweigh the safety, the readiness, or the lives of American troops on the battlefield. Their true objective is unmistakable: to seize veto power over the operational decisions of the United States military. That is unacceptable. As President Trump stated on Truth Social, the Commander-in-Chief and the American people alone will determine the destiny of our armed forces, not unelected tech executives. Anthropic’s stance is fundamentally incompatible with American principles. Their relationship with the United States Armed Forces and the Federal Government has therefore been permanently altered. In conjunction with the President's directive for the Federal Government to cease all use of Anthropic's technology, I am directing the Department of War to designate Anthropic a Supply-Chain Risk to National Security. Effective immediately, no contractor, supplier, or partner that does business with the United States military may conduct any commercial activity with Anthropic. Anthropic will continue to provide the Department of War its services for a period of no more than six months to allow for a seamless transition to a better and more patriotic service. America’s warfighters will never be held hostage by the ideological whims of Big Tech. This decision is final.

So, @openclaw can use a computer but lacks physicality… I’ve been solving that by taking photos of physical things (like books to digest), but what if I gave it access to my 3D printer!? Going to see what this can do for our homeschool curriculum 📚🤓

@arekfurt The cooling value is the only one that makes sense to me. When a hard drive dies it’s ejected with space junk? I havent seen anything about maintenance, does it just run its course and then has a final burn to send it out to space?
