UPDATE: As Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haiti comes to an end today, Haitian TPS holders could become subject to immigration enforcement beginning tomorrow, July 28, if they no longer have another lawful basis to remain in the United States. Individual circumstances vary, and some people may have other forms of immigration relief or pending cases that affect their status. Rep. Sylvia Garcia announced that House Democrats have now secured 210 of the 218 signatures needed on a discharge petition to force a House vote on the American Dream and Promise Act, which would provide protections for TPS holders from Haiti and 16 other countries. The petition does not extend TPS and does not stop deportations. It is a procedural step that, if it reaches 218 signatures, could require the House of Representatives to hold a vote on the bill. Even if the bill is approved by the House, it would still need to be approved by the Senate and signed into law before it could take effect. House Democrats say they need eight more signatures to force the vote.
