#IDEALFire fieldwork kicking off today. Tara leading a team collecting biodiversity and soil data in heathland ecosystems to understand the effects of different management practices. NB I am safely locked in my office as I am a liability in the field.

The Blackbird colour-ringing project is in full swing, with more than 50 birds ringed! The most valuable data though, comes from sightings, so if you manage to spot one and see the colour ring please email or message me the location and two letter colour-ring code 📨🐦‍⬛

@tommartin2013 Still counts! I was about to say you also don't need to see any other bird from the family Balaenicipitidae, but then I saw its the only extant one anyway haha

I submitted my thesis on Friday! The journey so far has been super fun and I’m so grateful to the wonderful people who I’ve shared it with. My thesis may be submitted but @AlicePackham made me a cake to remind me that doesn’t mean I am Dr Howard quite yet!

The analysis illustrated here combines trait data of extant birds (AVONET) with measurements of extinct species. It shows we already lost many unusual island bird lineages and, unless conservation efforts are successful, we risk losing many more
Pedro Cardoso cardosopmb.bsky.social@cardosopmb

Matthews et al. find large body mass, flightlessness, marine habitat affinity and higher dispersal ability are among the #traits driving #extinction risk of #island endemic #birds. Threatened endemics represent unique functional space @JBiogeography doi.org/10.1111/jbi.14…
