Born this day 26th. May 1916. Sgt. Henryk Skowron. Polish One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Skowron… Killed in an air crash. Cause unknown. He is buried in St Andrew’s Catholic Cemetery, Dumfries. Age 25.

Born this day 25th. May 1920. Sgt. Rene Jean Ghislain Demoulin Belgian One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Demouli… He was killed as a Sqd. Leader when he took off from Alghero in Sardinia in his Beaufighter. The aircraft came down in flames and he was killed, aged 23.

Born this day 25th. May 1917. FO. Peter Cape Beauchamp St.John. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/St.John… He was shot down and killed in combat with Me109s. His Spitfire crashed at South Nutfield, Surrey. Age 23. He us buried in St Mary’s churchyard, Amersham.

FO. Michael Giles Homer. One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Homer.h… Awarded the DFC. He was shot down and killed when his Hurricane crashed in flames at Bluetown, Mintching Wood near Sittingbourne. He was 21 years of age.

Born this day 24th. May 1914. Sgt. Frederick George Hindrup. New Zealand One of THE FEW. bbm.org.uk/airmen/Hindrup… His Wellington collided with a barrage balloon over Harwick, burst into flames and crashed into the sea. Age 23.

Putin didn't invade Ukraine because of NATO. He invaded because Ukrainians were proving democracy works. Historian and Pulitzer Prize winner Anne Applebaum puts it plainly: Putin looked at Ukraine's democratic movement and thought, "If they can do it in Ukraine, then people could do it in Russia. So I need to crush this." That's the real threat Ukraine posed. Not missiles. Not borders. A working democracy next door. Applebaum frames the war as a fault line between the democratic and autocratic worlds. Russia isn't just trying to take territory. It's trying to erase Ukraine as a nation, reduce it to a colony, and send a message to every country that the post-1945 rules of Europe no longer apply. Those rules were simple: no invasions, no wars, borders don't change by force. Russia understood exactly what it was breaking when it crossed into Ukraine.

23 May 1942 P/O Etienne Emile Louis Winterbeeck (87680) RAFVR Age: 24 He was lost whilst flying in Spitfire VB, BL476 of No 350 (Belgian) Sqn, which was shot down during an engagement with Fw 190s, he went down into the sea off Calais. He is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial
