Will someone in the media please ask him — directly — what has he been promised in order to resign his 100k a year job in the middle of his term? A peerage? Ask him if he's made a backroom deal to upgrade his taxpayer-funded job to a taxpayer-funded job for LIFE. These kinds of shenanigans are contemptible. No respect for his constituents at all. And wants the money, without having to ever face the voters again. This is everything wrong with our politics in one shining example.

‘It may be noble puppeteering, but it’s still puppeteering.’ @Lewis_Goodall questions Labour’s Josh Simons over his decision to stand down as the MP for Makerfield, triggering a by-election for Andy Burnham to contest.

@OctaneMark @markchristie Research indicates that very few councils operate a specialised Bank Holiday service to enable residents to report serious planning breaches. The government would have take action to regularise this for all 300-odd councils in England.

@JohnCheston @markchristie That’s certainly good to see – but clearly many (most?) of them don’t. Surely it should be regularised for all councils.

The anarchotyrannic YooKay, yet again. And councils wonder why people hate them.

@markchristie You wonder why the hell council planning offices don’t have someone on call over Bank Holidays. This happens so often and it wouldn’t take rocket science to prevent it.

@MotoClark I agree about the lobbying (and also party donations), but the fact that about 176,000 children are living in temporary accommodation suggests something of a problem to me.

@markchristie The consultation you've highlighted is being run by central government. You would be doing well to submit a response to it inside five minutes, though, as there are no binary questions to answer.

Given that consultations are utterly pointless because councils simply ignore them and do as they like, let's make them actually useful and turn them into local referenda. It'd be a damn sight harder for the activists to ram them too.

The menopause is linked to changes in the brain similar to those seen in Alzheimer’s, according to a large UK study of nearly 125,000 women. Professor Barbara Sahakian, senior author from Cambridge University, explains what has been found.

@matoxley Back in the day I introduced an arts page into Motorcycle International, and persuaded John Berger (yes, THAT John Berger) to write us an essay about biking. Civilisation is possible, even in MotoGP.

@LJHAMMOND2 @Ross63329179 Unless you can find a way to get the engine oil fully up to operating temperature, to burn off any condensation in the engine and exhaust system, and to replenish the charge lost from the batteries in starting them, I would personally try to avoid doing that.

@Ross63329179 I started the car a month ago with no problem. Tried again today and it was much more difficult. It started eventually but it took a few minutes before it fired properly on all 4 cylinders. It needs a run but I can't go anywhere until February.

My Honda CB500 now starts, with more than a little help from a mate. I don`t intend to tax & insure it until April so I must start it at intervals until then. When my driving ban ends in February my first priority will be taxing and insuring the car. Now day 110 of 184.

@JackTShaw Wiltshire's Council meeting last month lasted about 12 hours, which is perhaps good going by comparison!

Fact of the day: the Great London Council set its Budget in 1985 after 23 hours of discussion. Is that the longest meeting held by a local authority?
