@I_am_JILLX @FondOfBeetles No. Being typically bipedal is a *necessary* condition for being human but it is not a *sufficient* condition. "Prime numbers >2 are odd" "So you think 9 is prime?" No. A number being odd is necessary for it being prime (>2) but it is not sufficient.

@davidbirkettsnp It's not half a country. 68% of Scots support equal marriage, support for abortion rights is even higher. Of course Kate has no position in the SNP now so she can say & do as she wants as it does not reflect on the party. But people are entitled to think maybe we dodged a bullet.

Hello all. A quick update from me. My sex screen assay is progressing well. I promised rapid: I can detect SRY from a cheek swab in about 30 minutes. I am currently testing whether I can drop it to 10 minutes without compromising reliability. I promised cheap: The current cost per assay is about £2. I am currently testing whether I can drop this to below the pound line, and it’s very promising. I promised accessible: The assay could be run by any grassroots sports coach, school nurse, and my Mum. I promised on-site: This is where my lab efforts are currently focussed. I’ve always held “from the UK to Uganda” as a principle, and ensuring easy deployment is crucial. I’m currently learning a lot of materials science… The other main push is setting up various blinded, larger-scale tests. This will require lots of form filling. If anyone wants to help me hit my final budget target, my crowdfunder is here.

Due to escalating disruptive protests, I have decided to cancel the remainder of these lectures. This is deeply lamentable, but the disruption has undermined the academic nature of this series. Students shouldn't face bullying or harassment when attending academic events.

@DivanJap @FondOfBeetles Language is always in flux (unless it is dead). A deliberate change in the meaning of words is not natural flux - especially if it harms people. "Woman" is just fine. Others may find a word that means "identifying internally or externally with a stereotypical feminine gender".

@FondOfBeetles Peeps are confusing language being in flux, which it is, with classification of living things.

Take woman, take female, take sex, take lesbian. Call us menstruaters, gestaters, baby feeders. Take any word you want. None of it makes a difference to our material reality.

Have thought about it all a lot. I now think there should be a parliamentary inquiry since the cops were looking specifically for criminals not governance failures.
