A few thoughts on the Iran ceasefire. First, must acknowledge US-Israeli action was necessary (did we want to wait until Iran had deployable nukes?), politically courageous & largely effective in the short run. Iranian navy sunk, huge hits to missile/drone inventory, leadership decapitation exposed weakness of the regime. Second, on Iran's POV: closing the Strait is their only near-term deployable weapon & they know it. Longer term they'd love to rebuild their nuclear program but I suspect Trump will not cave on this point. POTUS understands a revolutionary Islamist regime with a nuke is a no-go, & so do Israel, Saudi & the Gulf states. Third, on allies. European nations, UK, Canada have proven feckless & misled their citizens about the Iranian threat level. Saudi & certain Gulf nations tried to play both sides previously, but when they were threatened, they turned to the U.S. Time for Riyadh to join the Abraham Accords. Create a ring of economic prosperity around Iran. Also why are we not talking about Turkey neutrality - a NATO member? Fourth, on Asia allies. Disappointing to see India, Japan, Malaysia & Philippines try to cut their own deals with Tehran for Strait access. @StateDept should have tough convos about mutual interests. Using Pakistan as a mediator will needlessly irk New Delhi & it's unclear why we need them. If Iran is serious about negotiations, do it face-to-face, not through a third party. Lastly: No one - I suspect not even POTUS - knows how these negotiations will go. Iran may try its old tricks & try to weasel out of serious concessions. If they do, Trump should restart hostilities & urge Iranians to take back their country. They're not going to get back on the streets until they know we'll support them. Human rights is a moral issue but also a strategic tool, and one this administration often neglects.
