Winning your conference is the only way to get in that ISN’T subjective. Winning your conference should matter. If it doesn’t, get rid of them.

If a top-12 (non-ND) team gets left out, it is literally only because a conference champ gets an autobid from outside the top 12 and takes their place. Not ND’s fault.

Notre Dame is in AUTOMATICALLY starting in 2026 if they finish top-12 (would have bumped Miami this year even though Miami beat them) And man did they ever schedule 2026 with this new exemption in mind. Brilliant negotiating and scheduling.

You’re right. James Madison does a great job and they’re an awesome Group of Five team. It’s not James Madison’s fault that the ACC botched its tiebreaker rules. You’re either in the spot where if you have to discuss this for your job that you have to lie about them belonging in the playoff and their chance in the playoff, OR you’re basically a jerk for noting that they played that 123rd strength of schedule and they couldn’t even handle Louisville’s defensive line and physically are unlikely to match up. I hope they shock the world, but I’m not counting on it.

@jdpickell at this point just go to 24 teams and every conference champion gets in, the rest at large. the SEC can get 8 teams in, Notre Dame will get in every year, all the G5 champs get a shot, everyone’s happy

To illustrate how preposterous it is to give playoff spots to G6 schools ranked outside of the top 15: Remember that Tulane’s best player last year, an RB who rushed for 2,779 yards and 22 TDs over 2 seasons, transferred to Oregon in 2025 and was beaten out by 4 running backs.
