@lutheranpeasant We held a 'hymn sing' last year where people could vote on their favorites, and then have taken the top ones and increased their frequency on Sundays to ensure all ages learn the most beloved hymns. (We sing some more modern music too, but always at least 1-2 hymns per week.)

What many Christians don’t understand is that tradition isn’t about the past. It is really about the future. If you cut yourself off from tradition, you have nothing to pass on to the next generation. Do you really think that the songs you hear on the radio that you want to sing in church will still be sung in the next century? They won’t even be sung next year! And that cute new method for understanding Scripture? it will be forgotten in six months. Everything we do today is a flash in the pan. To lose tradition is to cut yourself off from the future just as much as from the past.

For all my US friends, you may like to know that I filled up my Chevy Equinox-size car today (13ish gallons) for the equivalent of $105 ($152 AUD). Fortunately I don't drive much and that will last me 2-3 weeks.

@BicycleAdagio I ride with a group of old guys on Saturdays. 2 of us have pedal assist bikes, but we stay together at 15-20km/h and you would hardly know which of us have them. So I really don't plan to change my habits at all.

New legislation in Queensland means riders of legal pedal-assist e-bikes will be required to hold a state learner licence, despite these vehicles being no more dangerous than regular bikes. How this works for visitors or tourists to the state is anyone’s guess. Ridiculous.

@TakeThatClouds @DrMargaretShow Did you follow a few years ago when her buddies took over the local county government and she tried to get her husband installed as head of the health department to spread their nonsense ideas? Everybody got sued and it has cost taxpayers a ton of money.

@DrMargaretShow Sorry but this is completely untrue. She initially raised concerns about exposure to chemicals on the ground at an airbase. She then fell down the chemtrail rabbit hole and started making things up and refusing to sign purchase orders. She is not a “whistleblower”.

@MarkWerling5 @account_plain My last 2 LCMS churches had communion every week, confession & absolution, law & gospel preached, and modern worship music. I fail to see the problem.

@account_plain Contemporary worship was a mistake. Every effort should be made to restore and preserve traditional liturgy.

That is not a terrible compromise, and would still deal with the main problem.

@lutheranpeasant Only visited Des Moines once for work, but had a good vibe. Similar size to Grand Rapids but added benefit of being the #1 city in the state, so all the important stuff goes through there.

Iowa is a well run state with lots of opportunity. Des Moines would be a great place to raise a family if you want to live in a midsize city.

This morning, I got to lead primary school chapel and share with the students that God loves them even when they make mistakes. Perhaps someday I'll learn how to apply that lesson to myself too.

@timrwild @j_more_ I was a tv meteorologist in Grand Rapids. Your description is very good... Different thermodynamic profiles do weird things to snow/sleet/etc. Totally natural.

What would actually weird is if we had “normal” snow today. I’m also in southern Michigan. It was warm yesterday, but there’s a turbulent weather system moving through. The air isn’t below freezing at every elevation. Snow forms cause it’s freezing up in the clouds, but as it falls, it gets warmer and the snowflake starts to melt, but as it falls the temperature drops again and it freezes in sort of a slush ball shape. I remember seeing stuff like that 15-20 years ago. It’s not new, it’s completely normal.

Just an observation: Michigan snow looks weird lately.

@wrowclif I can also walk to those businesses here in Brisbane, Australia, pop. 1.3 million. It's not so much the size of the place, but the effort to develop in a way that is not so car-centric. I wish more places in the US would try it!

If you lived in Saint Ansgar, IA (population 1,100), you could walk over to the local pharmacy quick before they closed and pick up your daughter's prescription Along the way you'd pass half a dozen businesses to sustain your daily life, and you'd have it pretty good.

@HansFiene Interesting that in a thread started by a Lutheran pastor, populated by presumed Christians, 50+ people have commented without any suggestion of trying to share the Gospel with our Muslim neighbors. What is wrong with us?

Muslims can be good Americans, but they can only be good Americans by being bad Muslims. And we’re going to have to deal with that problem soon.
