It’s the service charge and the leasehold system, that’s it. Nobody actually gives a fuck about how they look and the average Twitter YIMBY aren’t the people buying flats in Nine Elms or Canary Wharf or even Royal Arsenal
Philip Oldfield@SustainableTall

London has built lots of flats…but few people want to buy them Since 2014, some 20,000 flats have been completed in Wandsworth. But nearly 40% of modern flats there have sold at a loss in the last 5 years archive.is/A3rfy

@MRJKilcoyne Scope to add other cities? Appreciate don’t need 300 comparators, but I’d like to compare where I live to the list you’ve currently got!

@2D0XPS Juries are often extremely reluctant to convict bad drivers where the penalty would be severe. Careless driving offences with comparatively slap on the wrist consequences exist essentially to avoid juries acquitting bad drivers entirely.

Why is the maximum sentence for ‘causing death by careless driving’ 5yrs when the maximum sentence for gross negligence manslaughter is life? If you're going to accidentally kill someone because you were being stupid you better make sure you do it with a car.
Adam Tranter@adamtranter

In England a driver can be speeding, using cannabis and a phone, overtake another vehicle, mount the pavement outside a school playground and kill a 4-year-old girl while uninsured — and receive just 3 years 10 months for causing death by careless driving. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

@benn_elisbenn @DrSdeG It mean English to the equivalent of level of e.g. a level French, not that they can pass A Level English Language/Literature.

@DrSdeG As you say few born in this country would reach that standard. Does the English A level now have an oral exam? It used to be mostly English Literature in A level English, which I didn’t do.

The new BYD flash charger can use 1,500kW of power to recharge a battery from 10 per cent to 97 per cent in just nine minutes. All the drawbacks of electric cars are being eliminated one by one.

@speeednet @AvonandsomerRob It doesn’t - it’s basically economy 7 remarketed to EVs, but equally suitable for storage heaters, topping up home batteries or doing late night laundry etc.

With an Octopus Energy EV tariff, you can charge your car with 250 miles of range for £6, using cheap overnight rates of 7p/kwh. That's around 275 miles per gallon of petrol, equivalent. Why is there still a resistance to Electric Vehicles?

I am a firm believer in freedom of religion, but I do think that if you've paid 50 quid to watch a top-level football match, you are probably entitled to feel a bit peeved when the game is stopped after just 13 minutes – completely outside of normal protocols – to accommodate the rituals of a minority religious belief system.

@AlbertZ19206434 @moving_charlie Right to manage - 50% of leaseholders can band together to form their own management co. Freeholder will drag it out though, and in practice many tenants aren’t motivated enough to go through with it.

Is there any wonder people don’t trust leasehold any more? They’re not all this bad, but when you don’t know which ones are or aren’t, many will decide the only safe option is to avoid completely

@FArkonus @Cr7Godbrand But if a gender split develops, they’ll be forced to pay the roles equally, just like Next with warehouse/retail workers and Birmingham council’s dinner ladies/binmen.

The problem here is they need to do it more officially. Have it linked with the training for dealing with violent patients and if you are registered as being able to cope with such patients you get a pay increase for doing so. Then you aren't paying the men more, you are paying the people that deal with those patients more and tying it to additional training. That training would need to only qualify people that can actually deal with it. Which is likely going to be 99% men. Problem solved.

My issue with this post is this: why didn’t the women ever complain to their bosses about the sexism of assigning only men to care for violent patients? Why didn’t the women fight for equality by also asking to be given violent patients? If it were money or promotion, they would have fough for it.

@ValMThatcher @Davidpr52119342 @CallumCMason @TheIFS Lowering the interest rate slightly would only benefit those who go on to earn very large salaries and are on track to pay their loans off. As you say, problem is threshold has been lowered in real terms worsening cost of living.

@Davidpr52119342 @CallumCMason @TheIFS The thing is it wouldn’t make much difference to many - given your example 50,000 interest over 30 years is an interest rate of 3.1%. Cutting the plan 2 interest rate would make no difference whatsoever to a person with that loan. The problem is the freezing of the threshold.

A lot of people replying to this telling me the interest rate is actually good? Doubt many know that for the last cohort of Plan 2ers @TheIFS says the long run issuing of the loans will be negative i.e. the Gov will be making profit on them! Details here: wonkhe.com/blogs/graduate…
Callum Mason@CallumCMason

When plan 2 student loans were introduced, the message was: the interest was very high but the trade was that you wouldn’t have to pay till you earned a good salary. Over time, politicians have slowly brought the salary threshold down in real terms + done zero about the interest

@Squirrel_nn @TJiMTS It shifts properties from the rental market to the owner occupier market. While this may reduce purchase prices, it’ll likely increase rental prices. Benefits those looking to buy soon, worse for long term renters.

A landlord collects £1,200/month rent Pays £1,000/month mortgage interest = Real profit: £200/month. But HMRC doesn't see it that way. Section 24 means higher-rate taxpayers can only claim 20% of mortgage interest as a tax credit, not the full deduction. So they're taxed at 40% on £1,200, then get 20% credit on £1,000 back. Tax bill: £3,360/year on a rental "profit" of £2,400. They're paying more in tax than they actually make. This is why so many landlords are incorporating or selling up.

This is very important. What I find particularly offensive is when nonparents opine that they would never let their children watch an iPad in a restaurant, or stuff like that. This is why people don't have children.
Phoebe Arslanagić-Little@PMArslanagic

It's fine that you don't breastfeed. It's fine that your children watch TV. It's fine that your children share a bedroom. If we want people to carry on becoming parents, then it's important that we avoid putting unnecessary and escalating pressure on mums and dads. telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/02/0…

Lmfao I can only buy *one* bottle of calpol and one adult paracetamol 16 pill pack because of UK suicide prevention laws. My entire household of 6 has the flu and I also need ibuprofen and the kids are different age ranges meaning I need both infant and 6+. Thanks Keir!

@MonkEmma @tecchiegirl The permit system admits cars are often the only practical option or they’d be bus/999 only. Instead the council decides which journeys are worthy. Absurdly, city residents w/ best public transport get the most permits while those further out with fewer options are penalised.

@MonkEmma @tecchiegirl They’ll make many car journeys impractical. Most people already only drive when walking/cycling/bus isn’t viable. Soon, trips outside your neighbourhood or to the city centre won’t just mean traffic, you’ll need a permit. That is a real restriction, and it’s fair to say so.
