we always think people buy products when they understand the products, but what if people buy products when they feel understood? empathy is a powerful thing - and gets harder at scale when many people in the middle don’t use the product nor understand the struggles of the user.

Ask a client their preference before sending a gift. I closed 3 deals with a client within a 2 year period. I sent a bottle of wine each time. He never said thank you or acknowledged receipt. When I sent the 4th I asked “Bill have you gotten the last 3 bottles?!” Him: Michael I’m an alcoholic… 🤦🏻‍♂️

I book the window seat whenever I can. I like it most when we float above a floor of clouds, with no line on the horizon - it feels to me like a future with infinite possibilities. I heard once that looking at nature, up into trees, across the sea or sky - for even a short amount of time - will trigger awe. I don’t know if it’s because we are reminded of our own insignificance, or of it’s the sense of wonder and peace that comes when we feast our eyes on things we have not made ourselves and could never be synthesised. I just know that it’s true. I believe that we only have one firefly life and in it we should try and do our best for those around us. That means speaking hard truths, being accountable for our actions, leading with empathy and kindness. Learning from others, embracing mistakes, doing the thing that is right, even when it is not easy. And more than ever we need a sense of humour! The world is a shitty place and the very least we can do is wring joy out of every moment, even the hard ones. Bad jokes, dad jokes, puns, one liners. Gallows humour, dumb Simpson quotes. Gravitas, after all is for graveyards. We need more hugs. We had two years of two meters apart. Hug all the people! Look people in the eye. Share secrets and give compliments and tell people the things you know you should tell them before its too late. Be a sound and honest human. At 45 years of age - with (statistically anyway) only 37 years left, and significantly less again with knees and a bladder that will do what they are told, I want my time on earth to have meaning. And maybe when it’s mine and your time to shuffle off, the people who fly home for you will look out at the horizon, with hearts full of the memories you made that matter to them.
