Listening to Rest is Politics/US and reading other commentators, it's striking how widely talk of "left-wing bias" in universities has taken hold. That matters - when academia is under political attack. Some thoughts from someone who worked inside major US and UK universities.🧵

Not unbelievable, sadly, but deeply connected. My entire body of work for a decade has been intersection of tech bro impunity, foreign interference & political capture. Attacks on the press are central to this. It’s why they came for me & why I know fighting back is so KEY.

Unbelievable that a man who spent US$75m on a film no-one wants to see about Melania Trump has just fired almost all the foreign correspondents on the newspaper he owns. You might think nothing was happening in this world. @JeffBezos @washingtonpost #SaveThePost

Such an honour to see a wonderful, long and thoughtful review of my book in the latest @LRB - by the excellent Florence Sutcliffe Braithwaite. It captures how each of my books were products of their specific political moments. lrb.co.uk/the-paper/v47/…

Off to Sweden (again!) with @alexahepburn to join Katerina Eriksson Barajas and colleagues in Linköping for two days teaching Discursive Psychology: data sessions, analysis, and lively discussion. Excited to reconnect with old friends and new ideas. #discursivepsychology #EMCA

There is an increasingly common and very lazy notion that universities are left biased. That needs countering as universities are under attack in the US but also elsewhere. I wrote a thread about it. 👇

Universities aren’t “biased” because they care about inequality or social justice. They’re biased toward evidence. Toward facts. Especially in the US, careless talk of “left-wing bias” invites real damage. Thoughts from US/UK experience here: 👇

@JonathanPotter6 Very nice, Jonathan - I also worked in USA unis (a dozen years at U of OR) and in Europe (10 yrs at Aalto U in Helsinki), and what you say is quite correct. I could say much more about Finnish unis as compared to the States, but political ideology has zero to do with any of it.

Serious conservative arguments are welcome - but like everything in universities, they must meet the same standards: evidence, coherence, and rigor. 12/

Calls for 'balance' between evidence and baseless denial don't protect free speech — they undermine intellectual rigor. Universities thrive on serious, evidence-based challenges, not superficial parity. 11/
