La vida de Horacio Quiroga estuvo rodeada de tragedias, suicidios y muertes violentas. Quiroga quedó huérfano de padre a temprana edad cuando en un accidente de caza éste se mató de un escopetazo. Su madre se volvió a casar con Ascencio Barcos, quien sufrió un derrame cerebral. Horacio fue testigo cuando Barcos, deprimido, se volaba la cabeza también de un disparo de escopeta. El año 1901 fue de los más trágicos de su vida. Prudencio y Pastora, dos de sus tres hermanos, murieron de fiebre tifoidea en el Chaco, Argentina. También ese año, ayudando a limpiar el revólver que su amigo Federico Ferrando usaría en un duelo, se le escapó un tiro que ingresó por la boca de Ferrando y lo mató. Quiroga, tras el juicio, fue absuelto de culpa. En 1915, su primera esposa se suicidó ingiriendo líquido para revelado fotográfico. Tenía 25 años y agonizó cinco días. En 1937 le tocaría el turno al propio Quiroga. Los médicos le dieron la triste noticia: tenía cáncer de próstata en un estado avanzado. Estando internado en el hospital, pidió para salir. Cuando regresó nadie notó que había comprado cianuro que ingirió esa misma noche. Murió al día siguiente. Increíblemente, la tragedia que rodeó su vida no terminó con su muerte, alcanzando también a sus tres hijos. Eglé se suicidó en 1938, Darío en 1952 y María Elena lo hizo en 1988.

Cuando murió Víctor Hugo en 1885, se desató la "hugolatrie". Su féretro fue escoltado por dos millones de personas y velado bajo el Arco de Triunfo. Ese día, un grupo de prostitutas asistió al velorio con un crespón negro en sus genitales en su honor, y cerraron los burdeles en señal de duelo a tan asiduo cliente.

Uno de los más grandes, no solo de ficción científica (aunque de ciencia no sabía mucho) sino de literatura. Fue prologado por Jorge Luis Borges, que lo admiraba.
