Critics claim that tonight’s South Park episode, Scott Tenorman Must Die, has gone too far, as it depicts character Eric Cartman forcing a classmate to eat his own parents. Band Radiohead cameos.

@dpottzzz @Yanksrule So you're saying in this scenario the cascading tax payment gets the other guys paid? Is that what you're trying to say?

@JoshEngleman @Yanksrule i mean: yes, it is. this is why i asked at the start if you understood the CBA. the players - as a whole - will get the same amount of money regardless of what wemby's contract is or isn't. so if wemby takes less, other players will necessarily get more.

The NBPA is preparing to fight back hard against the second apron, especially now with the news of Wembanyama passing up on the supermax to help the Spurs try to keep its roster together long-term. “(The CBA) should not put a player in a position where he has to carry the burden in order to keep a team together. A system that does that, we have a problem," per @JaredWeissNBA.

Gary Trent getting 4/$64 after the year he just had is obvious circumvention and should be punished by the league. This would fall under the provision that there is no possible explanation other than circumvention.

@dpottzzz @Yanksrule That’s not true at all. The Spurs have to have the ability to pay someone more. If there were no roster spots or limitations, sure. But they could be the exact same team whether he makes 55 or 45 and the only different is a tax payment.

@JoshEngleman @Yanksrule i am not saying “other players on the spurs get more money.” i am saying that the amount of money the players get is 50% of basketball related revenue and if wemby gets less than someone else gets more. this is a fact of the CBA

LeBron should announce he’s signing with the winner of the in-season tourney. Maybe we can make this an annual tradition, until retires, at which point we make Steph do it.

All I ask here is simply “what other player in the past has agreed to sign for the minimum one year, gone on to have his worst season in seven years where he was a below-average player by any standard, and then received 5x as much money in free agency the following year?”

@dpottzzz @Yanksrule No. It doesn’t. Because the Spurs don’t have any more to give. It’s not creating cap space. Their future is set in stone already. Wemby is just paying the tax on Fox.

@Yanksrule @JoshEngleman but the CBA provides that the players get the same amount of basketball related revenue no matter what. wemby taking less just means other players get more. and the tax goes to other owners, not the players

There is no free agency for the Spurs in the future. Wemby is paid. Fox is paid. Castle will be. Harper will be. Vassell/Champagnie are already here. These guys aren’t going to have cap room because of this. They will pay less tax or skirt the luxury tax. They get no freedom for free agents from this.

@JoshEngleman Saving 51 mill over 5 years helps either keep the team together or go get an extra free agent they need when the time comes.. also I’m sure he’ll get another extension like this in 4 years.

@Guze1120cfga The word for this is semantics. Those things are the same thing. Not taking the max means he’s taking a pay cut.

@Guze1120cfga @DZimmer23 Well, in this case, no. Victor Wembanyama is worth way more than the maximum allowable contract an NBA player can make. But his worth from a contract perspective is the max he can have at any moment, yes.

You’re both missing the point entirely. I don’t want Wemby to have to do this to provide the discount to the team. I want the league to fix paying home grown players. I want the Spurs to stay together. It’s way more fun. But the best player in the league shouldn’t take less money or something is wrong. You guys think I’m somehow mad at Wemby or Brunson. Couldn’t be further from the truth.

@DZimmer23 @JoshEngleman Lol, right? Wemby and Brunson going team-first are admirable, to say the least. The Spurs 1st dynasty superstars Duncan, Manu, and Parker also did this sacrificing of excess money for the good of the team. It clearly works.

@dpottzzz The primary benefit of this contract will be savings to the Spurs owners in the form of luxury tax payments. Why do you want Wemby to not make his max? If not him, who?

@JoshEngleman again though: bad optics for what? it does not affect the total amount of money the players receive as a group. luxury tax payments benefit cheap owners (who receive those payments), not the players.
