Tracey Hanson has campaigned with extraordinary courage and tireless determination following the murder of her son, Josh. Because of her work and the @JoshHansonTrust, we are extending the time limit for appeals under the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme.

I spoke to @BBCBreakfast about the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme. After 7 years of campaigning with @TraceyHansonLdn, change is finally happening to fix a process that too often failed victims by lack of awareness and an inflexible deadline. This is a significant step forward.

I've long called for changes to the Unduly Lenient Sentence scheme so victims and bereaved families have longer to challenge a sentence. They will now have six months to refer a case where it is in the interests of justice. As Solicitor General, I will always put victims first.

After seven years of relentless campaigning we are claiming a significant and long-awaited victory for victims’ rights. Following our extensive advocacy, the Government has agreed to transformative amendments to the ULS scheme.

Official Statement: Major Reform to the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) Scheme After seven years of relentless campaigning through the Josh Hanson Trust, I am claiming a significant and long-awaited victory for victims’ rights. Following our extensive advocacy, the Government has agreed to transformative amendments to the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) scheme. The Historic Wins for Victims: •The justice system will now be legally required to inform victims and bereaved families of their right to appeal a sentence. •In a major shift, the window for victims to appeal has been extended from just 28 days to 6 months. •Crucially, if a victim has not been informed of their right to appeal, they will now be permitted to do so after the 6-month period under special circumstances. These changes represent a hard-fought victory in ensuring that families are no longer left in the dark or rushed through a traumatising process during the most painful moments of their lives. However, I am deeply disappointed that the Government has chosen not to name these changes ‘Josh’s Law’. This decision does not honour the seven years of evidence and advocacy that drove this reform. It does not just ignore my son Josh and what we have been through as a family, but the hundreds of bereaved families and victims who we continue to advocate for through our charity The Josh Hanson Trust every year. Furthermore, a critical injustice remains parity of time. While the extension to 6 months is a massive step forward, victims are still not afforded the same timeframe as offenders. True justice requires an equal playing field; until victims have the absolute same window of duration to act as the offender, the system remains fundamentally unbalanced. I would like to thank the Victims’ Commissioner for England and Wales, Max Lawson Policy Officer for Victims Commissioner for London and Baroness Brinton who has continually and tirelessly supported our campaign for their support. These reforms are a testament to Josh’s memory and the dedication of everyone who stood with the Josh Hanson Trust. We have moved forward, but the fight for full equality in the eyes of the law continues.#undulylenientsentencescheme #joshslaw

In 2019, I sat through my son’s 5-week murder trial. What I saw was unexpected and disappointing. I witnessed jurors nodding off after asking the judge how long the trial would take, and heard the judge mention "he had to have a break for another important case" while ours was still in progress. It raised real questions for me about professionalism and whether the current Crown Court system is stretched to its breaking point. On one hand, these delays and behaviours show why some argue for "efficiency" and moving "lesser" crimes (under 3yr sentences) to judge only trials to clear the 80k case backlog and save costs. On the other hand, the jury’s guilty verdict felt legitimate to us because it came from the community, not just the state. Based on common sense not just technical reasoning. For me knowing that 12 ordinary citizens agreed that a crime was committed provided me with a profound sense of legitimacy and public acknowledgment of my loss. The debate over removing juries for smaller trials is a dilemma which comes down to efficiency vs rights. However, we must consider the victim and what a trial with or without a jury would mean to them and not just prioritising a faster, more professional "conveyor belt" of justice, or protecting the 800-year-old right to a trial by peers. ⚖️ #UKLaw #JuryTrial

Confirming to the Bill Committee that - contrary to what some people are saying - that jury trials aren't being taken away.  Jury trials will remain for the most serious charges, including murder, robbery and rape.

Spoken with such tenderness and grace despite absolute heartache and pain. No mother should ever have to grieve their child or have to fight for justice because of institutional impunity. Stay strong you have an army behind you @MrsEmmaWebber 💙🙏🏻

Today, I have announced £5 million of funding for the @CPSUK to support victims of domestic abuse in the Crown Court. Victims will be offered a pre trial meeting with the prosecution. This will provide them with better support and ensure their voice is heard.
