This is an obvious, compounding issue. Cheap contracts work out far more rarely than expensive ones, bc you are much more likely to be signing a much worse player. The Mariners generally take these high-risk gambles instead of safer, better, spendier odds, & it often burns them.

@MBurchTax For the ones you extend and do post 4/15, what is your strategy for navigating what to have them pay by 4/15 for either the extension or Q1? Do you do a quick estimate still or just tell the client to just make a payment by 4/15 of their choosing or be okay with late pmt fees?

Yoshida is a tough fit on the roster unless you can trade Haniger, but this makes it pretty clear the Mariners only want to trade Castillo if it means they save significant money by doing so, contrary to what they’re telling us

@MarinerMuse @AndersJorstad Weird counterpoint. No they would rather acquire a better player for the $24M AAV they offload from Castillo. Yoshida is not very good and has a bad contract. Makes sense why we rejected the offer.

@TyDaneGonzalez I guess I interpreted the report as the “guarantee” from the M’s was higher than what he got from Cle. That could easily mean something much less than a $12M AAV. Maybe it was something like $8M with $7M player option or something. Highly improbable they would offer him $24M gtd.

I mean, even if they have more, two years (he'd absolutely take the player option) at an upward of roughly $12mil AAV for a 39-year old first baseman who put up weakside platoon numbers is not the play imo.

Given what's come out about the contract the Mariners offered Santana, I'm glad he chose Cleveland. And frankly, the offer is a pretty big yikes for Seattle if they truly only have $16-20mil to spend.
