@RewiringK12 @MatthewAKraft Good insights... I agree. We know the history of education thus far (video, classroom desktops, internet, 1-to-1 devices, etc.) and the behavior of humans. This doesn't end well.

AI, specifically 1:1 personalized tutoring with a human still in the loop, has great potential to change education. However, I’m gravely concerned about the machine that is public education being able to navigate the many serious pitfalls of this technology and avoid the irresponsible tendencies that have been shown towards edtech over the last 25 years. It’s going to take real, deep, thoughtful work on a vast scale I’m not sure our public education system is capable of.

When asked about AI and the future of K-12 teaching during a panel at #AEFP2026, I responded that I thought very little of what teachers do on a day-to-day basis *in classrooms* would change in the next 10 years. The reaction I got suggested this is a heterodox view. Am I wrong?

@dylanwiliam @MatthewAKraft I've looked into NotebookLM, and I struggle to see it as a powerful tool for educators at the elementary level. Especially a school that has already done a lot of curriculum, instruction, and assessment planning. Can anyone speak to this?

@MatthewAKraft I would have agreed with you a few months ago, but as I work with Google's Notebook LM, I am now much less certain than I was. One important difference is that Notebook LM is more extractive rather than generative AI...

Absolutely every strategy we launch in a school should be able to point to the evidence bases that inform it, especially when it lands heavily on the public purse. 'What's the evidence for this?' should be the first question from our lips. The best thing about this is that anyone can ask it, whatever rank you are. The onus is on the strategy's enthusiasts to justify themselves.
missy purcell@MissyPurcell

Another reminder from the brilliant @HollyLanePhD 👇 Not all “evidence” is created equal. If an intervention can’t point to randomized control trials, systematic reviews, or meta-analyses…it’s not strong evidence. Parents & educators: ➡️ Demand quality ➡️ Ask for the research ➡️ Watch for snake oil #ScienceOfReading #Dyslexia #RighttoReadIreland

@PapaBearMyers Would it be possible to add the percent change in student achievement (i.e., across grades & content areas), based on state (i.e., M-STEP) assessment data?

School districts across the country are claiming budget crises. But what if the data tells a different story? I built an interactive dashboard that shows how staffing and student enrollment have changed over 30+ years for any U.S. district. What's your district's story?

Does @1000HoursOutsid App allow individual users to link to a group inside the app? For instance, students within an elementary school link to their school, and can share their logged hours outdoors and badges they've accrued with schoolmates for friendly schoolwide competition

Know how some people start their talks with “stolen land” declarations? A lot of edu-pundits should make stolen ideas declarations.

@S_Oberle As I’ve said before, if the folks promoting inquiry based approaches truly believed is was as good as they claim, they wouldn’t be constantly lecturing us about it. They’d let us “discover” its superiority on our own.

At the heart of the Direct Instruction model is checking for understanding which is what makes it a highly interactive way of teaching. It will surprise many to read that DI is the “opposite of the lecture format.”

Principals don’t always know what they’re doing. Sometimes, we’re just fumbling our way through… trying to support the teachers and love the kids.

@dizdarm @PamelaSnow2 @tserry2504 teaching at my current school has shown me how stark the differences are, with real kids. So next time we hear something challenging, particularly as the wind is blowing in the direction of explicit instruction, let’s remember it’s about our kids. They need this. 10/10.

I am teaching at a school which has implemented high quality explicit instruction K-6. My Year 2 class is on average higher than previous 3-6 classes. This is not ‘because of SES’. This is not ‘because kids are just different’. It is because they have been carefully, 1/

@PrincipalProj @RANESIAEDWARDS Build trust, competence, & credibility; encourage others daily; and focus on instruction (your learning and teachers’) and let all the calls and emails and ‘stuff’ occupy the small spaces in between…or else they’ll consume all your time. Oops, that’s 5 😬

Help a reporter: I'm familiar with the grassroots teacher movement that gathers here on X to discuss the science of learning. Is there a similar thing happening with principals? Why or why not? Thanks!
