After spending a lot of time this past year looking at school systems in other countries, the UK's obsession with school uniforms seems bizarre to me now. So much time/energy wasted on arbitrary infringements which would be far better served on other things. The idea that anarchy will reign without school uniforms seems to be an article of faith with many UK school leaders but I'm not sure what the evidence is for that. Many countries have no uniform requirements for example United States, Germany, France, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Denmark, Austria and Switzerland. And there is no real evidence that it leads to better academic outcomes either - the top performing country on PISA for example is Estonia which generally does not require school uniforms. There is also a cost-benefit imbalance where the level of resentment that strict policies instil in some kids seems to far outweigh any benefits. A lot of kids are completely turned off school for having a long fringe or hair shaved too short. That's ridiculous. I'm aware of the purported benefits of uniform and there are many strong arguments in favour of them but the opportunity cost just doesn't make sense to me. 🤷‍♂️

Difficult concepts, non-adjusted, will overburden working memory. When there’s no sequence or structure - students are overloaded. That’s what teachers need to know. @researchEdhome @researchED_Aus #researchEDNEWY

@jdtdobson I note that “She supports teachers of mathematics to teach differently, by helping them to connect students’ classroom learning with the real world.” Clearly not a cognitive science background. She’d rather teachers drown in planning and programming for 7 subjects.

Using high-quality resources has improved my practice &, more importantly, the learning of my students. I am tired of the gaslighting that is evident in articles like this. blog.aare.edu.au/why-these-quic…

@Penny_VB @greg_ashman In both cases, those people being in leadership held back positive change. It’s hard for the teachers and leaders who do want to work hard to be better in those situations. TBH the lack of pedagogy knowledge of when to use explicit vs inquiry is a massive gap for most.

@tenaciousKat @greg_ashman Agree, I think most have students at heart - and in best case, drawing on expertise reversal Effect, inquiry should strengthen learning in right contexts. So it’s misapplication vs laziness vs good use It’s a shame those outliers aren’t moving on (tricky w teacher shortage!)

@Penny_VB @greg_ashman Yep. I don’t think it’s every teacher who likes inquiry, but at each school I’ve worked at (except my current), there’s been at least 1 person like this. Always in leadership too, so they don’t have to be on class…every time I popped in when she was ‘teaching’, she was sitting.
