Remember all these figures can only be estimated. Nobody is close to being able to verify them at this stage. Access to the area is incredibly difficult. Rescue equipment can't get through. So while it's clear this is a terrible disaster, an accurate death toll is some way off.

The letter adds: "The situation remainsunstable as the landslip continue to shift slowly, posing ongoing danger to both the rescue teams and survivors alike."

Papua New Guinea now says that 2,000 people were "buried alive" in Friday's landslide in Engas province. It has made the estimate in a letter to the @UN seen by the BBC. Earlier estimates put the death toll at around 670.
