@Super70sSports @MattWelch With maturity, you recognize that great art was/is always being created and will continue to be created in the future, but simultaneously recognize that certain features of an era’s greatness are tied to its time and its specific artists and will not come again. Same with sports.

@notjessewalker I can’t wait until the next status update I have to deliver to the team, because now I know both the backing musical vamp and oratory cadence I’ll be using. I’ll also address everyone as “Children”.

@jessesingal I know dolphins are intelligent, but are they intelligent enough to have “stock photo model regrets” the way humans do when their photos wind up in a hemorrhoid cream ad or something?

For choosing your nearest and dearest, the principle of free association should mostly (but not exclusively) hold sway. For refining your intellectual capabilities, exposure to odd, adversarial, and even repugnant ideas is valuable. There are some vague border cases, like a social club for generally like-minded individuals, but the educational operations of a university is not such a border case. Should the special case of a commencement speech be included in the free speech mandate? I’m not sure, but it sure appears to me that most of those who insist that any speaker reflect their already held values feel that way about the mission of the entire educational project. Given that, I’d be inclined to want to hold the line.

FFS, NYU students can't not become self-parodies given half a chance. I have many disagreements w @JonHaidt but would have welcomed him as a graduation speaker. Few have done more to expand good intellectual diversity and ferment in academia. Let him speak! HT @benryanwriter

@nickgillespie 1010 WINS will be letting us know if alternate side of the Strait barging rules are in effect. (Okay, barges aren’t the right type of shipping vessel here, damnit, so close to a good joke…)

@JennyENicholson I just watched the Video Graveyard ramble video a couple of hours ago, coincidentally.

Writing from Black Mountain, North Carolina, in 1952...what do you suppose are the chances this person was mixed up with Black Mountain College?
Jason Colavito@JasonColavito
Sometimes I wonder what compelled everyday Americans to send J. Edgar Hoover their completely unhinged UFO speculations, like this 1952 letter suggesting aliens need human help to communicate and blaming "water" and "trees" for preventing us from being as advanced as they are.

@hradzka I swear, at least when it comes to the national level, the two major parties seem to be doing their best to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory, presumably because it’s so much more fun to get paid to point fingers while never worrying about actual policy.

she really did “what if the real police abolition was the friends we made along the way”
Zaid Jilani@ZaidJilani
AOC sitting next to Ibram X. Kendi calling for abolishing police and prisons, citing Angela Davis. "Destination is to have a society that doesn’t need prisons, that doesn't need police." Then she says "carceral system" isn't how to respond to rapists.

Great song, great video. But sharing for the vocal harmonies and the insane modulation: up a whole step, and then ultimately down a minor third, leaving you a half step lower than you started. Unique and beautiful. Long live rock.

Super Sky Point to Bobby Cox, who piloted the Braves to 14 division titles and a World Series triumph. Perhaps most impressively, he was ejected 161 times during his Hall of Fame career. That’s an entire season of righteous anger. Tell St. Peter to watch balls and strikes. #RIP

@reason I’ve heard the “not paying their fair share” rhetoric my whole life, and I’m sure it’s been going on before I was born and will continue after I die. But what principle of “fairness” are the speakers using? How do they determine if the “rich” are paying their “fair share” or not?

@amyalkon @nickgillespie We have so many problems, but our problems are the problems that any large, powerful nation have manifested (think about what the Belgians, the BELGIANS, got up to when they had some power). Our virtues are unique and important.

@EsotericCD @MattWelch I was watching at home. I was so happy for the west coast 7-Line Army contingent in attendance that day. What a moment they had the privilege of witnessing.

Today is the tenth anniversary of the single most inspiring feat in professional sports during my adult life. Stand and bear witness. Remember where you were when Bartolo Colon hit a home run. amazinavenue.com/mets-history/9…
