I can say clearly that the American journalist shelly kittleson has effectively become a hostage held by KH. It appears negotiations with the government are likely, potentially involving the release of KH-linked detainees "those arrested for targeting U.S. interests with rockets and drones" in exchange for her freedom. *Multiple security sources have confirmed this, though there has been no official statement!

This story on US journalist Shelly Kittleson is an unsettling read for freelancers - the framing is one of personal choice over systematic failure. A disproportionate number of the journalists killed, kidnapped and injured in conflicts are freelancers. apnews.com/article/iraq-k…

The purpose of Shelly Kittleson’s kidnapping might be to use her as a bargaining chip to demand the release of all the Kataib Hezbollah detainees, including the one who was arrested in connection to Kittleson’s abduction, @Mikeknightsiraq told me yesterday. His prediction proved to be correct, The New York Times is reporting that Kataib Hezbollah is asking precisely that. al-monitor.com/originals/2026… via @AlMonitor

One of drones fired at Erbil, capital of the Kurdistan Region on Wednesday night, by Iraqi Shia militias, hit a local restaurant filled with people. The Restaurant owner says “Thank God, the drone didn’t explode upon impact, otherwise, 50 people would have been killed.”

A concerning new trend is emerging as the drone attacks appear to be expending their targets: a coal-processing factory in the Khalifan area of northeastern Erbil was hit by two drones last night. This is the second attack on a local business since last night, after a motor oil store in Erbil was also targeted. Notably, both sites were struck by multiple drones, suggesting an effort to ensure their complete destruction. The motor oil store has so far been hit by four drones, while the coal factory was struck by two drones from different angles, leaving it completely destroyed. What also stands out is that the coal factory is owned by local farmers, who said they had purchased the facility from Iran. The owner said he did not inspect the site during the night and only went to see the damage after morning prayers. He estimated the losses at more than $60,000. The most likely suspects are pro-Iran Iraqi militias who have been the primary source of drone attacks on the Kurdistan region since the war on Iran by the YS and Israel begun on February 28th.
Kurdistan Watch@KurdistanWatch

There have been ongoing drone attacks in Erbil, mostly targeting the US base inside Erbil airport. What stands out, however, is that two drones appear to have deliberately struck a motor oil store. The reason remains unclear, but this seems to be the first direct attack on a local business interest, excluding oil fields and the Lanaz refinery. In previous cases, damage to civilian property was linked to debris from intercepted drones. In this instance, by contrast, the store itself appears to have been targeted, with a second drone hitting the same site just minutes after the first.

@qabdulzahra Shelly Kittleson often worked without formal assignments from editors and on a shoestring budget, taking shared taxis to lawless corners of Iraq where militia rule outweighs government control: @samya_kullab profiles the journalist kidnapped in Iraq apnews.com/article/iraq-k…

Blaming Shelly for being in Baghdad is the same twisted logic as blaming a woman for being raped. She was doing her job. The failure is on Baghdad that refuses to stop these kidnappers (everyone knows it’s KH). First @LizHurra, now Shelly - this is a pattern, & it must break.

Gratis, donatie=welkom juditneurink.eu/kidnap-amerika…

#Breaking | Erbil Governor says the motor oil factory in Erbil was targeted with 3 drones (07:30 / 08:40 / 10:20). The second drone hit while firefighters were at the site. The area is evacuated now in fear of more drones coming.

Kataib Hezbollah is one of many Iranian-backed militias in Iraq but is also considered to be one very powerful and among the closest to the IRGC; when Qasem Soleimani was killed in a US airstrike in 2020 near Baghdad International Airport, he was killed alongside Kataib Hezbollah leader Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis. Muhandis was a wanted terrorist; he was involved in bombings of embassies back in the early 1980s; a key Iranian ally in Iraq and the region. Kataib Hezbollah also kidnapped Elizabeth Tsurkov in March 2023; she was released in September 2025 after 900 days of being held hostage; the US was key to getting her freed.

The U.S. Department of State is aware of the reported kidnapping of an American journalist in Baghdad, Iraq. The State Department previously fulfilled our duty to warn this individual of threats against them and we will continue to coordinate with the FBI to ensure their release as quickly as possible.   An individual with ties to the Iranian-aligned militia group Kataib Hizballah believed to be involved in the kidnapping has been taken into custody by Iraqi authorities. Iraq remains at a Level 4 Travel Advisory and Americans are advised not to travel to Iraq for any reason and to leave Iraq now.   The State Department strongly advise all Americans, including members of the press, to adhere to all travel advisories.

I spoke by phone with @DefensieMin Dilan Yeşilgöz-Zegerius on security developments in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq. We both condemned the attacks targeting the Kurdistan Region and the Peshmerga forces, and expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions in the region. We also underscored the importance of strengthening bilateral relations and I expressed my appreciation for the longstanding Kurdistan-Netherlands cooperation in security and economic development.
