Hear ye! 'Tis time for #StuartSaturday! Tomorrow, Sun, 8 Mar 2026, is International Women's Day. Let's post about some fascinating seventeenth-century women. Detail from a portrait of Queen Henrietta Maria (1609-1669), 1638, by Sir Anthony van Dyck.

For the British Art Journal, I reviewed the National Gallery's exhibition, 'Joseph Wright of Derby: From the Shadows'. It's a fine show, but repeats a number of mistaken assumptions about Wright, and British 18thC art in general. 1/4

I have no connection with Lincoln of any kind, so I don’t say this from favouritism, but I really do think Lincoln is one of the few English cathedrals that isn’t just impressive, but a world-class wonder that stands among the greatest churches ever built

Something I’ve not noticed before on the west front of @LincsCathedral is that someone added 17th-century mitres to these figures of the Apostles - a rare example of post-Reformation ‘enhancement’ of medieval images

Today the National Trust launched an appeal to buy the land around the Cerne Abbas giant. Every appeal needs a graphic totaliser and I’d like to thank our fundraising team for their remarkable self-restraint over what they didn’t choose.

Pieter de Hooch, Dutch- time in an elegant setting. Painted 1663-5. A direct contemporary to Vermeer although lesser known. This painting shows a quiet intimate moment. Depicting such soft scenes are only achieved by skilled design and a delicate application of paint.
