Jonas Salk developed the first safe and effective vaccine against polio in 1955, helping to stop a disease that was fatal or caused paralysis. Rather than patenting the vaccine, Salk chose to make it freely available, famously saying, “Could you patent the sun?” His decision allowed rapid worldwide distribution, leading to dramatic drops in polio cases and protecting millions of lives. Salk’s work remains one of the most important achievements in public health history.
