A student asked me a question: I am sometimes told that it is “easier” for me in STEM as a student from an UR background because of all the grants available to me. How do I respond to this? I wanted to expand on my answer a bit here…

Went to Keller Peak fire lookout Sat. Sept 7 with @SoCalFirePhoto to view the #LineFire. After 98 years, the tower burned down yesterday. We were in the tower when the mandatory evacuation order went out, and believe these are some of the last images of the lookout.

#LineFire Everyone who sees this please be proactive and try to stop people from flying their personal drones over the line fire. Call law enforcement. If a drone is spotted all fire attack aircraft leave the area. Tell your friends and neighbors not to fly their dones!

The #LineFire remains very active on the northern and eastern flanks this evening pushing further into the San Bernardino Mtns above the 7-oaks dam. There are currently no evacuation warnings/orders issued for the mountain top district, but residents are always advised to be on alert and prepared. The fire has now charred over 1,100 acres with drift smoke pushing northeast across the mountains and into the Big Bear Valley. This fire poses NO threat to the Big Bear area. Monsoon moisture will continue to increase through the weekend with scattered showers and thunderstorms likely. Unfortunately this is two-fold, we could get some rain over the fire, but with thunderstorms comes lightning and strong, erratic winds. Humidity levels will also increase with a gradual decrease in temperatures. Will continue to update as conditions warrant.

#LineFire report today Sept. 5 at 6 p.m., it started in the City of Highland and is now burning on the forest. 172 acres with 0% contained. We are in unified command with City of Highland. 250+ personnel assigned with more resources on order. No evacuations are in place.

Key Personnel have to be named on the grant, they require a biosketch, and must approve the application from within the organization before submission (LOS too). If you want to replace them on the grant, you have to explain to the funder how they will be replaced.

Mechanism doesn’t require nearly as many fancy tools or obscure bioinformatic analyses that no one understands but they sure sound smart.
