My kids were chatting the other day about a science influencer they both like. The older one follows on Tik Tok and the younger one on YouTube. I had never heard of this influencer - they discovered them themselves, independently. It was one of many moments I've had while watching my kids grow up that I've appreciated how valuable the digital world is to children. The more I think about the social media ban, the more regressive it seems. Those of us with kids at school know that this generation is the best informed, most worldly generation in history. They know how to navigate misinformation, bullying, scams, threats, abuse and trolling better than many adults do. They understood AI the moment they laid eyes on it, and they use it daily. Their social lives are largely spent online. They're more in touch with their friends than any previous generation, even if they're meeting less in the real world. For current teenagers, I think the loss of social media will be heartbreaking. It's cultural vandalism.

@Ewarwoowar77 @sophielouisecc The conspiracy theorists are out in force about this arent they?! I am deluded then as apologise when this happens because personally the government need to ban them from SM as they spend far too much doom scrolling!

@sophielouisecc We don’t need government overreach now. If you believe their reasons for doing this, then it’s clear you’re deluded. This is simply a different route to full blown digital ID in the UK, after a massive push back on his previous attempt. A global agenda to turn the west into 🇨🇳

@mazzathth @Essex_Patriot The amount of madness from conspiracy theorists is mind blowing! How about stopping children having access to dangerous content/people or them access to your children. I admit that maybe 16/17 is a bit harsh

16-17 year olds having a social media curfew of 8:30pm is ridiculous You can't restrict access to media for the people that are allowed to vote. that's censorship YOU can work, drive, vote, have to pay tax but NOT watch youtube in the evening! Absolutely DISGRACEFUL policy, should not go through. this will make social media more dangerous for under 16s too. 🇬🇧

@zatzi @newstem61 Oh you are the "cool" Mum...no just a irresponsible one! if they all don't have SM then they can find other ways to communicate as we did. She can still chat with her friends just not doom scroll SM! How hard is it not to want your child to witness content that they do

Luckily, I’m a wildly irresponsible parent and will have no qualms about verifying my age in order for my daughter to do her homework, watch videos about her hobby / planned future career or chat to her friends (most of whom are a year or two older than her and will be able to continue to access the normal apps)

We are ruled by idiots. Do they not know every 15 year old revises GCSE’s on YouTube? Do they not know that teenagers track their friends are home safely on SnapChat? Do they not realise that - especially in rural areas with no transport - teenagers social lives are on… social media. Do they not know that teenagers will find ways round - as has been shown in Australia. This ban is illogical and damaging. If I hear another parent say “it’s so hard to police them” I’ll scream. It’s a parent’s job. Take responsibility the children you are meant to be bringing up. It is not the government’s job to look after your children. But the government will now insist all adults provide ID to prove we are over 18. 😡
Politics UK@PolitlcsUK

🚨 SUMMARY: The UK's social media ban for children from early 2027: - "User-to-user" apps where people create, share and interact with content (e.g. TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, X, Facebook) will be banned for under-16s - WhatsApp, Signal and YouTube Kids will be exempt - Under-16s will also be banned from livestreaming, messaging strangers on gaming apps like Discord and using disappearing messages - 16 and 17 year olds will face nightly social media curfews and limits on infinite scrolling with more details next month - AI "romantic companion" chatbots will be banned for under-18s - Adults can still access social media through age checks like facial recognition, digital IDs, passports and credit cards

Because we would get arrested, debanked, made bankrupt by subjecting us to long drawn out court cases, get fired for not being able to turn up to work while in a cell or in court. Anonymity is vital to a healthy democracy. If any state tries to remove it, then that is a totalitarian state.

@DrMaxPowarr @senfre_ You think Russia post the stats of who they arrest for dissent! The UK post their stats for people who get arrested but most of them don't get convicted they just get a telling off! Why is there a need to be anonymous if you believe in your opinion then say it just dont hate!

There are significantly more arrests in the UK each year for posting dissenting opinions online than in Russia. If I remember the latest stats correctly, the UK is top of the global league table for arresting people for expressing anti-government opinions. Now they want the names and addresses of the anonymous accounts and this is how they get them. Submit your id and keep your account. Don't submit your ID and you lose access to your account. We are living in one of the most totalitarian systems on earth.

@DrMaxPowarr @senfre_ WOW...then I am so sorry that you believe that this is true! If they wanted to arrest us then they would!! Last time I looked we are not living in a totalitarian state as much as some people seemed to think we are as how are you getting that thought process!

They are not parenting children. They are gathering the IDs, names and addresses, of all adults so they can no longer express dissenting opinions online, anonymously. They want to know who we are so they can arrest us for not agreeing with their views on immigration, housing, healthcare, etc. This is not about children. It is about shutting down opposition.

@DrMaxPowarr @senfre_ The Government is parenting children because of the dangers of SM and a lot of parents inability to control it and them! All of these stroppy parents online stating that they will help their children still access it like its a cool flex! Once they all stop then it will be stopped

And if they'd been a little more tech savvy, they could've banned your device from accessing certain IP addresses and websites, and set up quite times for your device to not allow internet access at night, all from within the router settings. We already have the power to control these things. This is basically the government shutting down anonymity online.

I’m all for banning social media for under-16s in the UK. But I think an exemption should have been made for YouTube. It’s unarguably the greatest free educational resource in the world. From coding and science to history, languages, and life skills, there’s an endless amount of high-quality content that teenagers can learn from. We should be careful not to throw the educational benefits out with the social media bathwater.

Don’t actually understand why the under 16 social media ban is angering people either. YouTube I get I guess.. But my kids (8 & 9 yr old) have Xbox’s, iPhones, TVs etc but they all have the parental control, which includes time limits and control of apps etc

@RobertJenrick So we employ Polish staff who have worked/lived and paid taxes into this Country for 20 years and are highly qualified! Does that mean we don't get the rate cut and have to pay an annual fee? Divisive policies..

Reform UK will reverse Reeves’ disastrous rise in the rate of Employers’ National Insurance. But we’ll do this for British workers only. We’ll fund this by introducing the Employer Migrant Labour Levy. Businesses will have to pay an annual fee for each migrant worker. It’ll hit unskilled migrant workers much, much harder than high skilled ones. Along with our migration and welfare reforms, this will see millions of migrants we don’t need leave. And get millions of Brits off welfare and into work.

Other parents: “Thank God Keir Starmer has banned social media and YouTube for under-16s. Best thing he’s ever done.” Me, fully awake: “Don’t worry kids, I’ve got the VPN ready.” My children belong to me. Not the state. And that is non-negotiable.

@sophielouisecc But that's the reason why they have had to ban it and take control from the children because some parents don't do it! It's not the state's fault that children are failing in life and SM is a huge part of it!
