i’m not trying to minimise it’s accomplishments or the performances in it but it’s not as special as people are trying to make out.

@NON21848128 It's been a while since I've seen a movie that made so many people come online acting like they cracked the Rosetta Stone just by getting the obvious themes and plot points the movie was portraying. It's a good movie but it's a pretty simple one.

Obsession is a good horror movie, but you can already see it attracting all the annoying intellectual media literacy "horror fans". You know the ones. Probably think Jordan Peele's movies are the peak of the genre for having "commentary" and everything else is just slop.

I rewatched it 2 weeks ago when it turned 5 and I think in retrospect it's a profoundly important work of art in that it's the last gasp of 2010s america. musical numbers with on the nose politics, moody lighting with mics on display and very early internet random = funny humour
