@norabird I like the bitter orange of Aperol, but I also like a good Lillet Blanc & Tonic or Spritz (w/Cava) or a Lillet Rouge Spritz (with club soda)

A stunning “sun candle” lit up the sky in British Columbia 🌅 This striking effect happens when sunlight shines through a narrow gap in clouds, creating a glowing vertical beam that looks like a flame.

@freganmitts And I say it’s a bummer because it seems obvious to me that people’s values almost always override any accumulation of knowledge or love of wisdom. Though I imagine you would say that just means they haven’t truly acquired a love of wisdom?

@freganmitts And the fact that up until ten years ago I believed philosophy could play an important role in getting society closer to the (lower-case) true and good. The past decade has been a real bummer in that regard.

I've seen this paper floating around before and find this sort of pessimistic induction extremely odd. It's like saying there's been no progress in engineering because the need for new infrastructure hasn't decreased. People simply don't get the purpose of philosophy.
John@ErrorTheorist

Here’s a paper arguing that there is no progress in philosophy. The author claims that if Aristotle visited a modern university, he would be amazed by modern physics but feel at home in the philosophy classes, since the debates haven’t fundamentally changed. What do you think?

@freganmitts Though I guess I would say that philosophy can make progress in the sense of coming up with better questions to ask about the subjects of its inquiries….

@freganmitts Definitely agree about the clarifying ideas/questions, identifying errors/fallacies, etc.

@freganmitts Having “wisdom” and the “good” as the ultimate goal(s) sounds like you agree with Plato. Can you say more about what you mean by wisdom and the good? Are those metaphysical concepts for you? (Personally I find myself agreeing more with Rorty over the past decade.)

Nutella may be having their moment in space, but we’re still waiting for Holden to get his endorsement deal for all the coffee he drank on the Rocinante! ☕️🙏🤪 #TheExpanse

@NaturalMagic777 It means that he’s interested in questions of meaning, rather than the causal accounts we would expect from science

He’s only an “idiot” if you think — as he also mistakenly believed — that he was supposed to be doing a kind of science. But if you understand that he was doing a new hermeneutics, you can see he was a true genius.
Wild Bill Wellman@WildBillWellman

I think Freud was an idiot, but I’m not going to lie, Freudian psychology led to some of the best art of the 30s and post WWII Without it you wouldn’t have most film noirs, or the works of Alfred Hitchcock or Ross Macdonald.

@SophieHaigney Great advice. Reminds me of when I wrote Denise Levertov telling her I wanted to quit being a CPA because it was killing my soul. “Just make sure to keep your attention on it only from 9-5 & don’t let it spill over.” Ah, if only. Still don’t have it sorted out 30 years later lol
