AI is killing All About Berlin. When you Google something, you used to get a link to my website, but now you get an AI-generated answer trained on my work. This has a devastating impact on traffic.

@falagor Come on, it doesn't take a genius to deduct the direction in which they're headed. I do hope they prove me wrong, but where there's smoke...

@JustAnotherTL Yes, I get all of this, but this whole situation seems kinda weird. Also, I think Warhorse did not officially and explicitly confirm they use AI for translations...? But I don't really know.

@StrayAlbert I must say, I'm surprised they didn't see this coming from a mile away - I understand the Chinese market can be quite isolated, but you'd need to have lived under a rock to not see how global communities react towards GenAI, the backlashes are practically weekly lol

@JustAnotherTL I guess it's not intended to be bad publicity, and the idea for the contest may have been rooted in the perception that AI are widely accepted (among Chinese users and such) and lack of knowledge how it's seen elsewhere

@StrayAlbert 1. Is acceptable - The linguist knows their own work best (but can be blind to their own mistakes) 2. Is ideal - you get a fresh pair of eyes and someone who can communicate with the team 3. Is OK, but LQA feedback might be used as an excuse to undermine the competition

Who should take care of LQA of a game? 1. Linguists that worked on its localization, 2. other linguists from the team that worked on its localization, who can discuss with them, or 3. someone outside the team? What's your choices and opinions? Thank you in advance!

@PEGiardinetti I agree, but it doesn't have to be this way. Companies (especially those making millions of dollars in profit) shouldn't rely on volunteer labor to get their products localized the right way. This is why paid familiarization tasks should be a standard across the industry.

@JustAnotherTL One of the main reasons why Minecraft Java Edition translations are generally better than Minecraft Bedrock translation is that Java translators are volunteer players who know the context, while Bedrock translations are outsourced to translation companies with hardly any context.

54% - That's the percentage of translators (out of 235 respondents) who only receive minimal or no reference material whatsoever for the games they're working on. Remember that figure next time you read a translation that sounds off in context!

@FrajdaGames @countlessn1ghts You don't have to invest in all languages all at once! There are studios specialized in guiding indie devs through the loc process: @riotloc, @locquest, @FromTvoid and more
