@WaterHist @Dr_TheHistories Usually it is going to be the father's name that sticks when they get married. This is a very common system in Hispanic cultures. Not every culture has the custom of women using their spouses surname. Some cultures it is the norm for women to keep their own name after marriage.

@JustHearSay @Dr_TheHistories I agree more are doing that but still not very many. And it’s pretty dumb. So you name your kid Joe Smith–Black. He marries Sarah Jones-White. So they name their child Andrew Smith-Black-Jones-White? lol

Every person in Japan will end up with the same last name. Unless the country changes it’s traditional marriage laws. Japan faces a "surname extinction" crisis as a mandatory marriage law could make "Sato" the country's only legal name within five centuries. A striking new simulation by Professor Hiroshi Yoshida of Tohoku University reveals a future where Japan’s rich tapestry of family names vanishes entirely. If the nation’s current legal requirement for married couples to share a single surname remains unchanged, every citizen could be named "Sato" by the year 2531. As the most common name today, held by roughly 1.5% of the population, Sato’s prevalence is growing annually. Experts warn that without legislative intervention, the diversity of Japanese identities will continue to erode, with projections suggesting half the population will share the name by 2446. The root of this demographic shift lies in a 19th-century legal framework that mandates spouses choose one surname, a tradition that results in approximately 95% of women adopting their husband's name. Critics argue this system not only threatens individual identity but also compromises centuries of family history and cultural heritage. Professor Yoshida’s study serves as a high-stakes call for the adoption of selective separate surnames, a policy change that would allow couples to retain their original names. By highlighting this potential "Sato-fication" of Japan, researchers hope to spark a vital national conversation about balancing legal traditions with the preservation of genealogical diversity. Source: McCurry, J. (2024). Japan could have a single surname by 2531 unless marriage law changes, study says. The Guardian. © Hashem Al-Ghaili #drthehistories

@WaterHist @Dr_TheHistories Not every culture does it that way traditionally. More women are choosing to keep their maiden name by combining it with their spouses surname and naming their children that way.

@JustHearSay @Dr_TheHistories I think it is very good. “They shall be one flesh”. That’s the idea of a family. A surname as we use did not exist. Adam was called Adam. But Adam also referred to Adam and Eve as a family. That’s why we use the husband’s surname to refer to husband and wife.

@WaterHist @Dr_TheHistories Not sure why one surname for a couple is a good cultural norm. Also I don't think Adam is a surname. Where in the Bible does it say their full names are Adam Adam and Eve Adam?

This is baloney. 95% take the husband‘s name. That does not converge toward Sato or any other name. Half of children born Sato are female and 95% will take their husband‘s name. The study was faulty. It took one years increase in the name Sato of a fraction of a percent and compounded that to infinity. A seventh grader news that is invalid. This is likely just a wimpy attack at good cultural norms. Common surnames began with Adam and Eve when God called *their* name Adam.

@PrimeAeon @Lynxabi @FreedomMemesIRL It doesn't have to be a Saturn V. If they really wanted to they could build something newer and better to land on the moon again. The Ford Model T isn't made anymore but we still have lots more automobiles on the road.

I’m pleased that Baywatch will continue to film right here on Venice Beach. When I heard there were issues with Baywatch filming in Los Angeles, my Office took immediate action with Councilmember Park to clear any City-related barriers, including making parking easier and more affordable for the production.  This was a team effort, among my Office, Councilmember Park’s Office, the County, Coastal Commission, Fremantle and FOX, and I’m thankful for this continued partnership.  The City of Los Angeles will always clear bureaucratic barriers, making it easier and more affordable to film in the entertainment capital of the world.

@aaron_akerlund @Variety It wasn't discrimination of women. At that time, women were allowed 6 weeks paid maternity leave. Most would go back to work after that. Men were not allowed any time off for family bonding. Work/life balance was not a big thing back then.

Lisa Kudrow went back to work 10 days after giving birth because the "ethos" in 1990s Hollywood was "work is the priority." “I had given birth to my son, and 10 days later I did 'The Tonight Show.' And then I was in a meeting for ‘Analyze This,’ and my agents were like: ‘Yeah, we’ll be ok, you’re not shooting until July, and it’s May, it’s no big deal.’ But in the meeting, Billy Crystal said, ‘I mean, you look great, are you sure you’re able to do this? When did you give birth?’ And I told him, and he’s like: ‘Alright, well, we start Thursday.' Today’s Monday, and then Thursday you have to fly to New York... It’s insane. I would never do it now. I thought this was insane. Everybody else thought [it’s fine]… I just deferred to everybody else and thought, ‘I guess it’s okay to go back to work immediately.’ I’m not mad at anybody. It was at a time when work was priority and everything else has to accommodate. That was sort of the ethos at that time.” variety.com/2026/tv/news/l…

Alex, what happened to you? I listened to your show for 10+ years and bought a bunch of your products. Since the war in Iran started I’d rather listen to a looped recording of a whale farting under water than the Alex Jones Show. You’ve gone so far off the rails you’re plunging over a cliff.

@AP4Liberty We don't give a fuck about anything say. You have no power or influence over anything. Tarriffs stay on and you can suck it. When the deficit is paid off (with tarriff money in no small part) there will be no need for an income tax, & it won't be Lolberts that had a part in that

I don't care if the Founding Fathers funded the government with tariffs because if you're not seriously also in favor of also repealing the income tax and shrinking the government down to that size then you can kiss my powdered ass. Until then no taxation without congressional authorization.

@crccpa1855 @america The public at large wants immigration to be properly managed so the Democrats are pivoting as they gear up for the 2028 Presidential run. What is a Governor from an amnesty state like Gavin Newsom to do? Get on the band wagon? How does he walk all that back now to become POTUS?
