Rarely we see a member of the Sangha speak out against the child abuse incident at Attamasthana. This silence leaves people genuinely doubting whether the #DhammaCourt will stop the abuse or simply protect the abuser.

Child Abuse Claims Made Against Nearly 300 #SriLanka Buddhist Monks in Last Three Years and only 27 cases filed! srilankabrief.org/child-abuse-cl… via @LankaBrief

No amendment, commission, or new piece of legislation can fix a system where accountability is selective and state patronage shields wrongdoing behind religion, politics, or power. The rest is just political theatre. Directed this time by @anuradisanayake.

So much for “One Country, One Law.” If every citizen is equal before the law, why is the Government now moving towards creating a separate mechanism to discipline Buddhist monks? Are monks outside the jurisdiction of the ordinary courts and legal system of Sri Lanka? If not, why is there a need for a special structure with separate authority? Who will sit in these bodies?Who appoints them? What safeguards exist to ensure independence, transparency, and accountability?Or is this simply another political exercise designed to shield certain individuals from the consequences of the general law? And if one religious community is granted a special disciplinary mechanism, what happens when Catholics, Hindus, Muslims, or any other faith demand the same? Can a country function with parallel systems of justice based on religion? This is exactly how dangerous precedents begin. The issue here is not Buddhism. Buddhism must be respected and protected. But respect for religion cannot mean weakening the principle of equality before the law. Sri Lanka cannot preach equality on political stages and then create exceptions when it becomes politically convenient. Leadership is about consistency, not populism. You cannot campaign on “One Country, One Law” and then selectively move towards separate legal structures when pressured. Why is everyone silent? Why are the same people who screamed about equality before the law suddenly afraid to question this? Why are all political parties and politicians silent? A nation governed by emotion, selective outrage, and political convenience will never build true rule of law

Funny watching certain N Peeps claim the RTI was “filed incorrectly” when the Presidential Secretariat itself accepted it, extended time under the RTI Act, and issued a formal response. You don’t do that for an authority with “no connection” to the fund. Nice try though☺️

Wildlife officials in Medawachchiya have discovered the carcass of a male elephant, around 30 years old, inside a cultivation well in Lunupahichchawa village. Villagers said the animal had long suffered from a leg injury and often sought relief in water. The elephant is believed to have entered the well and died there, with the body remaining submerged for days before being noticed due to the stench. D: newswire.lk/h5ma

Meanwhile, Colombo.

Over to you @HarshadeSilvaMP.

Artist Sangeeth Wijesuriya says he was informed by a Government Minister that International Monetary Fund (IMF) regulations would not permit a proposed US$ 23 million donation to be brought into Sri Lanka following the election victory of President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. Speaking to Lahiru Mudalige of Hari TV, Wijesuriya recalled campaigning for Dissanayake during the Presidential Election and publicly claiming that overseas supporters were prepared to financially support Sri Lanka if he came to power. He said he was emotionally moved when discussions first took place with individuals willing to contribute funds to help the country, noting that he had previously heard allegations about corruption and commissions linked to past administrations. Wijesuriya claimed that after the election victory, a group of four individuals from countries including Australia and the UK had expressed readiness to provide around US$ 23 million in support for Sri Lanka. According to him, the group had not intended the money as an investment, but rather as financial assistance for the country. However, Wijesuriya said they were later informed by a Government Minister that IMF-related regulations would not allow such funds to be directly transferred to the country in that manner. He said the explanation given was that such transactions could not be accommodated under existing IMF frameworks and financial regulations. Wijesuriya further stated that Sri Lankans living overseas remain deeply attached to the country and would be willing to contribute financially if there was a proper mechanism to do so. The artist also defended his earlier public comments regarding overseas financial support, saying he had spoken honestly based on the information available to him at the time. (Newswire)
