10 tragic suicides. Membership of the @loanchargeAPPG grows each day. Still no decisive intervention from the Government. Why not? #loancharge
Loan Charge & Taxpayer Fairness APPG@loanchargeAPPG

How much evidence do you need @HuddlestonNigel about the catastrophic impact the #LoanCharge & #HMRC’s unfair & ruthless pursuit of victims of mis-selling? People have been pushed to suicide, breakdown, strokes, heart attacks & miscarriage. This is the reality #LoanChargeScandal

@LizKershawDJ @EamonnHolmes the #LoanCharge debacle created by @HMRCgovuk has gone on too long. Now is the time for the government to bring this scandal to a close and stop pursuing victims for tax that was never due from them. @andrealeadsom @CommonsTreasury @DavidDavisMP
Loan Charge & Taxpayer Fairness APPG@loanchargeAPPG

Today members of @LCAG_2019 are in Westminster & Whitehall campaigning against the unfair & dangerous #LoanCharge & are meeting members of the APPG. We need a resolution that avoids bankruptcies & the risk of more suicides. #STOPtheLoanCharge #LoanChargeScandal

Thank you @trussliz for agreeing to look into the unfair #LoanCharge that has led to nine suicides, this is indeed “appalling”. Will you also commit to act @RishiSunak? Please commit to review & resolve the #LoanChargeScandal before more lives are lost.

Finally, this seems to say that the leader of the review must be someone “who will fully take on board” all Treasury concerns about a full repeal of the loan charge. 13/13

Here are discussions about the possible leader of the review. You will note the accusations of “abuse” from the LCAG. 12/13

And another problem about repealing the loan charge is that it would apparently dilute the anti-avoidance message at the forthcoming budget. A case of “il faut tuer un amiral pour encourager les autres”. 11/13

It will be remembered that the PM (before becoming PM) spoke of the unfairness of the loan charge. This non-scripted intervention caused the Treasury some difficulties. 10/13

And another reason for keeping the loan charge is apparently to disguise the fact that the government had acted unfairly. 9/13

This seems to suggest a mean cost of the loan charge of £250,000 (considerably more than the amounts hinted at by HMRC). 8/13

Apparently, a major consideration militating against the repeal of unfair legislation is the fact that it would require more work for Parliamentary staff and MPs. Given the statutory complexity that is the loan charge I fear that the irony was lost. 7/13

The Treasury did not want the loan charge itself to be up for grabs. 6/13

But it also shows that ministerial and official suggestions that the impact of the LC was low were perhaps inaccurate. This is 2019. Were official statements after that date ever revised on the basis of this new data? 5/13

Interesting how HMRC now think that the loan charge will collect more money than previously suggested. Of course that makes repeal less attractive to ministers. But .... 4/13

Of considerable interest is the Treasury memo anticipating the announcement of what became the Morse review. 3/13

This reference to “covering our backs” is rather unfortunate. Unfortunately, the full range of strategies has been redacted. But it is interesting to see that HMRC have concerns about defining what is meant by “fair disclosure” by taxpayers. 2/13

Reverting to the similarities, we have two cases of public bodies one should be able to trust (and which many are afraid to be seen to criticise) covering up their own failings and ruining the lives of ordinary people. 3/4
