When Gowon became Head of State. There were at least 10 People who were senior to him in the Military.
There were 4 senior officers and fellow LT Colonels who were superior to him in terms of date of commission into the Army including Ojukwu (senior by virtue of education)
The Most Senior Officer after Ironsi was Brigadier Babatunde Ogundipe, he was literally the Vice President.
However, after the Coup, all hell was loose and the Military became indisciplined. Ogundipe was in Ikeja and came outside and saw an Army Sergeant from the North. A sergeant is so far from a Brig General that on a normal day, the sergeant would eat sand if the General asked him to.
On this day, the Sergeant looked at General Ogundipe and told him he cannot obey his order and would have to clarify that order from his own Northern Major.
It was this realisation that made Ogundipe realise there was no way he would become Head of State.
He stepped aside and Lt Colonel Gowon from the North became the Head of State.
