Changing of surname was introduced to most African societies during colonial rule. Prior, women were not required to change their names. In Islam it’s also not compulsory; it’s also not necessarily a Christian culture (because it’s not Jewish) – the Europeans who came to Africa simply used it for convenience: - Europeans introduced fixed surnames for taxation, schooling, churches, and legal systems. – Christian missionaries often registered marriages using European naming formats (husband + wife under one surname) - Colonial governments enforced documentation that favored one family name (usually the husband’s).
