There’s a difference between knowing accounting and thinking like an accountant. I didn’t understand that for years. Several years ago I passed uni exam and ICAN exam, I knew most of the standards, treatments, rules. I thought that was thinking like an accountant but I wasn’t. Knowing accounting is answering the question when it’s handed to you. Knowing which standard applies. how to treat a transaction and knowing what goes where and why. Thinking like an accountant is finding the question yourself. It’s looking at perfect numbers and feeling something’s off. It’s connecting the P&L to what’s happening in the business. It’s pattern recognition and professional skepticism. None of that is in the syllabus. You don’t study your way across that gap, you work your way across it through exposure, curiosity, judgment calls and building an instinct. The qualification proves you know accounting. What comes after is the longer, quieter process of learning to think like one.
