No Longer Science Fiction: Japan Close to Growing New Human Teeth Japanese scientists have made serious progress toward growing new teeth in humans, something previously considered impossible. In September 2024, clinical trials began for a drug that can stimulate tooth growth in patients with congenital tooth agenesis. The drug blocks the USAG-1 protein, which inhibits tooth development. Earlier tests on ferrets—animals with a dental system similar to humans—showed successful results. The trials are now being conducted on children aged 2 to 7 who are missing at least four teeth. If successful, the medication could be available by 2030 for all forms of tooth loss, from congenital to acquired, potentially ending the era of dentures and implants by allowing people to regrow their own teeth.
