My Lily, Your passing is the hardest news I have ever received and the toughest news I have ever had to break. Sweetheart, if the Lord had allowed you to stay here with me for another 80 years, it still wouldn't have been enough for me to let you go.

My Mum is Dead. She fought until her last breath and I did the same. My heart is completely shattered. My life will never remain the same. I’m officially an orphan. This feels like a bad dream.

I don’t wish Nigeria on anyone. The health system has totally collapsed. We are all living on borrowed life. Spent close to a million in a private hospital in one day for my mom, only for them to refer me back to the hell hole that is UPTH. What my eyes have seen, I’m in shock

I just received a shocking phone call from my friend just now. His wife gave birth on Tuesday. She got discharged today, and he called me just now asking if the next step he wants to take is right or wrong. He said when his wife was close to her due date, she said her mother would be the one to come for omugwo, but he refused her and said his mother would be the one to come. After back and forth, she agreed. When they got home this afternoon, the first thing his mother said is that she's hungry and the wife should go to the kitchen and cook for her and her friend that came home with them. She was shocked and surprised so she called her husband, who went out to get something. My friend said he couldn't believe it. He came back and asked his mother, and she replied, "Won't i eat?" He took his wife to their room and begged her. When he finished narrating, I asked him, "Why didn't you let your wife mother come initially?" he said, he has seen the way his mother took care of his sisters during all their childbirth and want that treatment for his wife too. I told him now that you have seen it that your wife case is not the same as your sisters, what will you do? I also told him he needs to act fast as this is his wife first birth, and she needs all the care and help she could get. He said he wants to tell his mother to leave so his wife mother can come over to take care of her daughter. Kemi, is that right? I told him mother's can really be dramatic but one thing is clear now, that she is not ready to take care of your wife so let your wife bring her mother to take care of her after all there's room for everyone. What would you advise him?

It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby — a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist — to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display in the Hope and Change lobby at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.
