Illinois’ 4th Congressional District should have its place in the Gerrymandering Hall of Fame. At times, parts of the district were barely wider than a city block. It's a Democrat +17 stronghold. For decades it looked like a pair of earmuffs. Two Hispanic Chicago neighborhoods stitched together by a comically thin strip. The Economist roasted it as one of the ugliest districts in America. No Republican has won since the Cold War. When one party draws the maps, how do you fix something that looks like a toddler hurled spaghetti at the wall?

@LIEngProf @AmericaElectsHQ Republicans always freak out about this week, when drawing this differently would change absolutely nothing but probably result in two African American Democrats, rather than one African American Democrat and an Hispanic Democrat.

@AmericaElectsHQ That district was drawn by Rs when it originally appeared in the ‘90s. It was then kept on the compromise map of the 2000s and the Dem map of the 2010s. Dems then changed it and added a second Hispanic seat for the current map.

We’ve got our first batch of ED votes in for the Arlington mayoral race, and incumbent Mayor Jim Ross, who’s being challenged from the right by Steve Cavender, has gained slightly. He’s now within less than a point of avoiding a runoff.

One of the more competitive races in TX tonight is in Harris +8 Arlington, where incumbent Mayor Jim Ross is seeking a third term. The race is nonpartisan, with Ross as the liberal and Cavender as the conservative option. If neither reaches 50%, the race heads to a runoff.

NEW: Pope Leo XIV has named Salvadoran immigrant Evelio Menijar-Ayala to be West Virginia’s lone Catholic bishop. As a teenager, he made three attempts to enter the United States illegally. He finally arrived in California in 1990, having been smuggled in the trunk of a car with his brother over the border crossing between Tijuana and San Diego. Over the next several years, Menjivar-Ayala worked janitorial and construction jobs in California before deciding to become a priest. It’s a remarkable choice in a state that is over 90% white and voted for President Trump by 42 points.

@ChristopherHale Insane. Illegally immigrating and disrespecting the laws of another country is not only illegal, it's sinful too. This is outrageous for a priest. Illegally immigrating is NOT a noble act when you're not a legitimate asylum seeker (he wasn't).

@ChristopherHale Is he legal? I hate to ask that question but it said he came here in 1990 ILLEGALLY. As for WV you make it sound like it's the hinterland ... how is this in uplifting to slam a state and act like this new Bishop who we hope is legal won't be accepted by the citizens of WV.
