One of the things I've noticed about economy class air travel over the last five years or so, is how you almost have to beg for a second drink when the trolley comes round, or dare to approach the staff as they natter in the galley. You have to pluck up the courage to ask for that second glass of apple juice. Do you remember the golden days when the stewardesses were up and down the aisles with drinks all flight long?

@heisei_ramen As any rational resident of Western Europe will tell you about Islam “I can’t tell you how much or how little is ok, the only thing I can tell you is that none is better than any at all”

There has been a recent spate in Japan of Muslims requesting permits for “cultural exchange programs” and then instead holding large public prayer sessions. Over the past few months, numerous parks and castles have denied these applications on the grounds that they’re fraudulent. This is probably where the first legal battle over Islam’s status is going to be fought. Do you have the right to engage in explicitly religious behavior in public under cultural protection? This is of enormous interest to Shinto, which enjoys large scale privileges under both religious and cultural protections. It, however, is the indigenous faith. The legal discourse about this is gonna be important and interesting.

1- Some hotels in Vietnam (and other countries) require a deposit in case tourists thrash the place. It happens so many times that Vietnamese are unhappy about it and will forfeit it for cleaning services. 2- This is why we South East Asians dislike dealing with Mainland Indians when they come to our region. Every South East Asian culture I know of have an issue with them especially when they are narcissistic and behave like barbarians.

Indian man explodes at hotel staff in Vietnam over a security deposit being held on a credit card. Very normal procedure at any hotel across the world.

Fortunately my parents were both bankers and told me the trick on how to successfully get a credit card and minimize rejection. 1. you need to have at least 300,000 JPY in your account when you apply. 2. your visa stays must have over 1 year. 3. Your monthly expenses do not exceed 30-40% of your income

Gaijins living in Japan, which credit cards did you sign up to and get refused. Which accepted you? Your experiences are likely v different from J nationals who can easily get CC as long as they don’t have a bad rating from the CIC (Jpnese credit score)

@YukariSakamoto Simplest solution (that I use) if you walk into the restaurant and there’s already tourists there, just leave. Cancel the reservation or whatever. Not worth the awful experience. Cheap yen cheap people, unfortunately

Aussie friends, please help me. Twice dining in restaurants in Tokyo and Kyoto I have been stuck sitting next to Australian tourists who are doing speaker phone conversations. Super loud and disruptive. Is this normal down under? Can I tell them to please stop? Help!

@krzysztofwos @CacheThatCheque “If you live in Tokyo, English is all you need” Incredible statement. If you’re living here as a long term resident and not speaking the language to at least N3 level you’re not living in Japan, you’re living in a fifth column. You’re not living IN Japan, you’re living ON Japan

I've been living in Japan for 16 years and speak only the most basic Japanese. I never use hiragana or katakana, and Japanese wouldn't be convenient for thinking about the kinds of things I think about. One day, to understand Zen or Shingon properly, I might learn, but that has to wait until after the singularity. If you live in Tokyo, English is all you need.

@OliverJia1014 Congratulations. Getting a business bank account with a major bank can be next to impossible but I recommend going with a net bank (住信SBIネット銀行 was the easiest)

In some good news, today my business partner and I received the notification that our company has been officially confirmed as a registered entity in Japan! Still very early stages of course, but it’s reassuring after weeks of waiting. Definitely come prepared with a lawyer.

This was after a blow-up on the train. There was another blow-up this morning. We were late for school today. Japan has proven to be a challenging place for our young family. We are told no, to be quiet, and that we cannot be here multiple times every day. It sucks to constantly feel so unwelcome—that our sheer presence is such a burden on others just because we have young children with us. This experience will make our family stronger. Knowing that helps even in the most difficult moments. There's been a lot of them.

We quickly went from “I’m buying Google because Gemini is good” to “I’m buying Shinko Electric (6967 JP) because their ABF substrate line is the actual bottleneck on Ironwood v7e ramp and nobody’s pricing it in.

@InvestInJapan How many Japanese have just been setting-and-forgetting into オールカントリー over the past 4 years? If we go back to the 100/110 range, the value of most people’s NISA will poop the bed

@ChrisWordbox @thealepalombo I used to date a girl whose father was a Kuala Lumpur property developer. He said Chinese buyers always would turn up with several suitcases full of cash when buying condos.
