Former SAPS Special Task Force Member Arrested for Murder of Witness D SAPS Spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe says the suspect arrested in the murder of Witness D, Marias van der Merwe, is a former police officer who previously served in the SAPS Special Task Force. She confirmed that Matipandile Sotheni joined the police in 2005 and was a member of the elite unit from 2010 until his resignation in 2019. Mathe described his arrest as unfortunate given the high cost of training Special Task Force operators, which exceeds one million rand per member.
