Four years of grind on a PhD and all I got was this lousy pdf. So proud of my flat mate/wife who submitted her PhD today. Such an effort during several covid lockdowns and endless kids things.

Done! Four years stitched together in a PDF.

🍥 This hypnotic wind-flow pattern continues for hundreds of kilometres from its source at Mt Taranaki - Von Kármán vortices!
💫 "Vortices" is the arguably cooler-sounding plural of "vortex" which refers to some rotating fluid/air.
🗻 Here we see the southerly wind splitting around both sides of the mountain. Friction slows down the layer of air in contact with the mountain more than the air further away, causing a spin in the flow that creates eddies/whirls.
🔄 These eddies alternate forming on either side of the mountain and continue to spin downstream over a huge distance before dissipating. If there are clouds at the right height like today, we can visualise this beautiful flow pattern.

Crystal clear waters, abundant kaimoana, flourishing seabirds and a thriving blue economy...
This is the picture painted by Te Āhua o Tīkapa Moana 2173 / The State of Hauraki Gulf 2173, showing what the future of the Gulf could be if action is taken now.

A @NatureComms study from @BUEarth's @xiedanghan and co-authors aims to tackle sediment buildup in New Zealand estuaries by exploring restoration methods. Researchers want to know if removing mangroves helps curb mud accumulation & revives original estuarine ecosystems. 🧵 (1/3).
