I’m excited to announce the launch of @RivetTax today. After piloting Rivet quietly with @NickAbouzeid last year, we saw an opportunity to deliver a better experience to an industry that hasn’t experienced major disruption since tax forms could be e-filed.

So thrilled to be in Rivet's orbit - they deliver SUCH a superior experience in an important, too often stressful part of life. Congrats to the team today! 🧡

Today is Day 652 @RivetTax. Since launch, we’ve filed over 1000 tax returns for companies like Cursor & Cognition. We've become #1 most-rated firm on Sam's List. But today is special, because we get to announce our $5.1m seed round led by XYZ Ventures & Susa Ventures.

Excited to co-lead this $5m seed in Rivet. We believe in the full stack AI services thesis. But all end markets aren’t created equal. We think tax is a good problem space for AI technology. Rivet is the best company in the market.

Thrilled to share we’re co-leading this round with XYZ and @haystackvc. Nick is a throwback to a different era - a true “hedgehog founder” in the vernacular of @honam. “In the end, we agree with Jim Collins – that Hedgehogs are the ones who build great, lasting companies. As entrepreneurs, they are the rarest of breeds – those who can start something anew, make it work, stick with it, and build something special, and ultimately, inspire others along the way, with their determination, dedication and commitment.” Hedgehog founders are one of my favorite archetypes - @khawajasn is a canonical example for me and why we partnered with Shinkei in their seed round before Founders Fund led their Series A. Nick has that same sort of relentlessness and determination and customer obsession. It’s why Rivet works with some of the leading AI companies in the world, from Cursor to Cognition and Chai Discovery. AI services is a core idea we believe in at Susa. We were fortunate to be the first investors in @hanoverpark last year, and Rivet fits squarely into that thesis area. It’s rare you meet someone and you know exactly what they’ll be doing in 20+ years– and that their business will still be compounding that far into the future. Long-term thinking is rare these days. Yet when I sat across from Nick in his Woodbury home, I could see the vision: he’ll still be building @RivetTax, and it’ll be the premier corporate accounting firm on the planet. Full blog at link in my bio. If you’re a founder looking for best-in-class corporate tax, reach out to Nick or me. Pumped to be on this journey!

652 days of the most fun I’ve ever had, doing the thing that I love most, with other people that love it as much as I do. I am humbled by the enthusiasm of our clients, investors, and team. Today’s announcement is a fun milestone, but we’re just getting started.

Rivet’s new, but the work isn’t. Our cofounder @K__Christenson spent six years as an IRS auditor before starting his own firm in 2016 — the one we rebuilt into Rivet. The team’s been filing returns for over a decade; we’ve just given them the software they always deserved.

Some news! Today, I am launching @RangerNetHQ – the first and only AI product that writes, runs, and maintains QA tests that find real bugs. Ranger’s mission is to power testing for the world’s most ambitious engineering, product, and design teams so they can get back to building. Our tech is already used by companies like OpenAI and we’re excited to share more about what we’ve been building.

Context is everything in tax. It’s where the negotiation is won or lost with the IRS. Tax tech is a liability without solving for this. The acquisition of @LobbySo gives us a head start in building tech that improves the client and tax pro experience without compromising context.
Nick Abouzeid, EA@nickabouzeid

It’s Day 329 at Rivet, but today is just the beginning Proud to announce – we've acquired @LobbySo to power the future of AI-empowered tax prep, with Lobby's founder @WiLSONSACCOUNT joining Rivet as our founding engineer to drive our AI efforts internally Tax prep is both art and science. The art is in interpreting IRS guidance and guiding clients through their own interpretations of their financial realities. The science is a set of tasks that need to be completed to furnish a completed tax return to a client, most of which involve finding some specific string of numbers or letters, a needle in a haystack of emails, PDFs, Zoom transcripts, and Slack conversations. The art of tax preparation cannot and should not be automated. But the tedium of trawling 1000s of pages of PDFs for a specific cost basis for a secondary sale, or thumbing through a transcript for the name of a subsidiary entity mentioned once, that absolutely should be. The meat of tax preparation isn’t just converting a single W-2 or K-1 into a data packet that Drake or CCH can interpret, but knowing where to find needles in client-provided haystacks. Wilson and the rest of the Lobby team spent the last three years focused on reliably pulling specific answers from reams of unstructured data. And just in the last month of working together, we know we’ve made the right call having Wilson join the team. Personally, I’m just excited for next tax season when we can put all of his & the rest of the team’s hard work all to good use! 🥂

Andrew and the entire Taxwire team have been stellar to work with 🏆
Andrew Rea@andrew__rea

Excited to introduce the company I've been working on for the past ~18 months Taxwire.com. Taxwire solves sales tax compliance for founders, finance, and accounting teams scaling across multiples states and countries. Our customer base spans SaaS companies like @Pulley, e-comm brands like @TilitNYC & @Italic, retro video games makers like @modretro, modern media cos like @PirateWires, and many other modern and legacy industry businesses alike. We also partner with several accounting firms to solve sales tax for their clients and internal accounting + tax teams. We can handle both simple and deeply complex businesses. Our products and services help companies: 👇 - Understand tax exposure & nexus – in other words wtf you should be doing about sales tax - Fix messes – clean up messy tax situations (e.g. we went from 0 to $10M in revenue and have collected no taxes) and/or save money on historical tax liabilities (e.g. avoid getting wrecked by penalties from governments for historical taxes) - Register – get and maintain licenses, registrations, and permits required for collecting/remitting taxes - Calculate tax rates – collect taxes accurately across your billing + payments + commerce stack - File & pay tax returns – autofile recurring tax returns & payment remittance Common scenarios where Taxwire makes sense for scaling companies: 👇 - Companies getting sales tax compliant for the 1st time – e.g. you haven’t been collecting sales tax (even though you should) or you just started to cross meaningful revenue thresholds ($1-2M in revenue). - Switching from Insert Legacy Tax Provider – If you’re switching from another tax software / services company, not only can we make the switch easy (e.g. we do the migration heavy lifting + buyout your existing contract), but we can also find + fix previous tax errors, potentially recovering thousands of dollars in overpaid taxes. - I have no f*cking clue what I’m supposed to be doing. Pls help. – We got you. Have helped a bunch of folks figure out a no B.S. take on what they need to be doing with sales tax (if anything). A good example of scenarios 1 and 2 – we recently helped our friends at Italic recover over $200k in overpaid sales tax within their first month post switching from their original provider. --- Why sales tax compliance? Well, global transactions taxes (aka indirect taxes as the tax pros call it) are a much bigger problem space than most realize. Before the internet, sales tax was a Fortune 500 problem. Walmart has a sales presence in damn near every jurisdiction in the world. Post-internet, we have e-commerce, marketplaces, SaaS, remote work, AI, etc. Every company by default sells across multiple states and/or countries. Regulatory changes in the US and abroad have made collecting and remitting sales tax, VAT, and GST a problem for virtually any company with material sales in more than one tax jurisdiction, with or without a physical presence. Our goal is to solve indirect tax compliance globally - for every jurisdiction, product, tax filing, and edge case. From initial compliance all the way to defending audits from the gov. It's a big, complex problem space. We're just getting started and have much work to do. If you’ve dealt with or are dealing with sales tax compliance for your business or clients, I’d love to chat and see if we can be helpful. My personal phone number is 513-520-1578. My DMs are open. Or email me at andrew@taxwire. Happy Monday.🫡

We’re thrilled to have Luis on the team. Rivet’s clients will be in great hands with his background. We’re excited to have someone that can walk the talk with our clients. He’ll elevate the service and shorten response times. Excited for next season!
Nick Abouzeid, EA@nickabouzeid

Newest joiner at @RivetTax – Luis Vinke Luis is our first Account Manager at Rivet, after 3 years at BCG and getting his MBA from MIT. He's also a former founder, our third out of 10 FTE. 🚀 We interviewed dozens of AMs for our founding AM role. It's not an easy needle to thread – the ideal candidate needs to be comfortable working with our entire spectrum of clients, from executives at unicorns, to unicorns themselves, to the VCs funding these unicorns, to influencers with millions of followers, each of whom deserve world-class support and guidance as they work through their tax prep needs. They also need to be deeply detail-oriented, and able to distill complex technical tax concepts into plain English for clients. Luis is already rocking & rolling, wrapping up EOY workstreams for clients. He's already filed a half-dozen returns, fixed our cover letter templates & completely onboarded Rivet onto Pylon – all in two weeks! So excited to have you join the team, Luis! 🙂

.@RivetTax announcement time! Welcoming Sanju Kumari and Arpitha John as our newest Assistant Tax Managers. Arpitha joins after 7 years at Grant Thornton and EY, where she focused on HNWI personal income tax preparation, with a special focus on issues that modern family offices and newly wealthy individuals often face – state/trust income tax prep, gift tax return prep, and FBAR/114 filings - all filing requirements that we bump into frequently with our clients at @RivetTax. Sanju joins us after 5 years at Grant Thornton and EY, also focused on HNWI personal income tax preparation. Sanju is also an Enrolled Agent – not an easy credential to earn while working full-time – which means she's uniquely privileged to represent taxpayers in front of the IRS. She was also the only candidate we've interviewed who picked up on a subtle issue with a sample Sch C we hid inside of our interview case study. Personally, I'm most excited and humbled the best and brightest tax preparers are choosing @RivetTax over the Big 4 to build and grow their careers and skillsets in tax. Sanju and Arpitha, welcome! 🙂

@MikeSyl36625988 Fixed pricing for returns. Hourly for larger consulting projects. Less likely to get burned on tax prep than consulting engagements with scope creep. If you solve for this, kindly share it out for the rest of us.

I have a value pricing question. We do a fair amount of value pricing and I am moving towards doing almost all value pricing. I really struggle to quote new clients, with complicated consulting engagements, anything other than an hourly rate with an expected range of times it could take. The only alternative would be to quote them all high and get burned sometimes. For example maybe I will them at the amount of time I think it will take me 80% of them time. If you have a brand new consulting engagement, with a lot of complexity; how to you value bill it? #cpa #ea

founding Engineer This is the third full-time role on our engineering team, following @thayallans & @KarmDesai. They previously was the first growth engineer at Pilot & founded @playcradle, a platform for web3 companies to acquire & onboard users delightfully & securely (which was eventually acquired by Stardust). Karm was his direct report at Cradle and followed him over to Rivet. We index heavily on former founders & entrepreneurs (everybody on the Rivet EPD/exec team has started a company at one point in their lives), and give you the freedom/flexibility to do deeply impactful work on your own schedule without red tape. Here a few examples of first tasks you would be working on in the first 90 days: - building “mods” for tax prep softwares like Drake that allows us to automate certain workflows for data entry. These products don’t have API surface and would require getting funky with the source. - build time-saving automations and delightful moments that make clients giggle – like @tryRamp's “forward from your personal email” feature (where I spent two years previously). An example of this would be identifying clients who haven’t set up specific tax-saving strategies based on their prior tax returns - integrate LLM models across our workflows, using the full breadth of data we have access to (Slack conversations, emails, Zoom transcripts with calls) as well as broader tax information to streamline our workflows & build delightful client experiences

founding Account Manager it's Day 247 at Rivet, and we've already grown to 200+ clients, from NFL cornerbacks, to executives at unicorns, to unicorns themselves, to the VCs funding these unicorns, to influencers with millions of followers, each of whom deserve world-class support and guidance as they work through their tax prep needs. This role is perfect for someone with experience: - directly managing HNWIs & executives, – through a complex engagement that touches compliance, tax, or finance in some way This is the first and likely only role for the next year that doesn't require technical expertise (eng / tax prep), and is perfect for someone with energy & hustle who is eager to put in the work to teach themselves tax. You'll work directly with me, our cofounder/Head of Tax @K__Christenson, and our clients. As the first member of our account management team (really our entire sales team), you’ll build close relationships with our customers, support them during onboarding and beyond. you’ll act as an important liaison between our customers, our product team, and our tax preparers.

Announcement time – announcing Kavitha Haridas has joined @RivetTax as our Personal Tax Manager. Kavitha spent 7 years working at Big4 firms (KPMG, EY, and PwC), where she led teams focused on personal income tax preparation for HNWIs and internationally-complex individuals around the world. She'll be focused on our most geographically diverse clients that oftentimes require deep work to determine how to handle their foreign income. We interviewed dozens of candidates. Personally, what stood out the most was her eagerness to both handle returns herself, and to spend the time to train & build a team that holds themself to deeply high standards and output, rather than just hours worked. 🙂 We're deeply excited to have you on the team, Kavitha!
