UPDATE: The Jirga members and the Pakistani Taliban affiliates held a meeting for more than an hour in Tirah, Khyber District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The TTP presented two demands to the Jirga: Implementation of Sharia like the one in Afghanistan . Secondly, the TTP should be allowed the same freedom like before, when the tribal areas were not merged with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The Jirga said they will inform the government of these two demands.

I have been explicitly vocal against TLP, blasphemy laws, and related politics. I regularly receive threats from these groups. But i have also interviewed enough people to understand most TLP are working class folks that you cannot collectively punish. Since I’m going to be seen as an idiot advocating for their civic rights let me appeal on the practical political grounds. This approach will fail, and blasphemy politics will gain even more momentum with a different name, as it has in the past (e.g., 1954 crackdowns). The function of blasphemy politics is repeated citations, circulation and staging of injury to create a potent political subject. The blasphemy politics will grow from these crackdowns unless we dismantle the apparatus through serious audits, reforms/repeal of laws and concrete actions, such as banning NGOs in the name of Namoos e Risalat, honoring Mumtaz Qadri, and conducting strict financial audits. We need to know who ordered the burning of each ahmadi place of worship, we need hanif qureshi in jail. We need justice and truth and accountability. The current strategy will backfire. I hope I'm incorrect, but my 15 years of experience suggest otherwise

Yesterday, I asked a Taliban commander about the comparison between the Taliban’s and Pakistan’s military strength.
He smiled and said to me:
“First, compare the Taliban with the United States and NATO — then compare us with Pakistan.”
Then he asked me:
“Did we, the Taliban, defeat the U.S. and NATO with aircraft and missiles?”
I said, “No.”
He smiled again and said:
“Then you should understand what I mean.”

Punjab is baying for the Afghan blood. TTP is not an Afghan creation. The good, the bad and the ugly Taliban are all products and byproducts of the Punjab-dominant Pakistan army’s disastrous Afghan policy. We have been warning of the deadly blowback for four decades!
