@Grabaka_Hitman And then there was the Kansas card, where QFs and semis were 1x5 so that the final could be 3x5 and they wouldn't exceed five five-minute rounds in a night. I remember talking to Adam Roorbach about it.

There aren't really fouls in MMA. What we call "fouls" are really just techniques you can do most of the time, but maybe not always.

@lthomasnews While I agree with the sentiment, going back and taking a point after the fight is over might set a very dangerous precedent. Davis would have fought differently if the knockdown was counted - referees need to be better educated and get the easy calls right the first time.

@MMAJunkie This is absolutely incorrect. Taking a point has no bearing on the fight going to the cards or not. At any point you can not lose a fight due to injuries resulting from a foul that is called by the referee.

It’s not the gloves, it’s the culture. The shameless, win at all costs mentality amongst fighters and the “eye pokes are an accident and not a foul” mentality most people seem to have. The good news is that we can change the culture. Penalize the foul immediately during the pause in action after confirming a strike or post was thrown with outstretched fingers. I believe not only a point deduction but also a purse deduction would have a rapid effect on how many pokes we see. I’ve come to these conclusions after being taped into those gloves 45 times, totaling over 7 hours inside the Octagon, landing over 1200 significant strikes (none of which were thrown with extended fingers, and I also slept at a Holiday Inn Express a few times.

@erikmagraken @JohnMcCarthyMMA A bigger question is why was a foul that directly led to the end of the fight not penalized. MMA needs a complete overhaul of the handling of fouls.

@JohnMcCarthyMMA Thanks John. Under Washington’s regs it reads that three complete rounds is all that’s needed. (Perhaps that’s why the 4th was not scored)

Hey Erik, no they were not there. Problem is this. You can look at what is on the ABC’s website under the rules, and it is completely wrong. It will say that the fight must go to the halfway point for the fight to be judged as a Technical Decision. That is only for fights that are either 2 round or 4 round fights. In a 3 round fight the fight must enter the 3rd round and in a 5 round fight it must enter the 4th round to go to a Tech Decision. There are places like California that go on the finished the 2nd of a 3 round fight or finished the 3rd of a 5 round fight. But the actual Unified rule states must enter the 3rd or 4th . That is why Jason made a start and halt of the 4th. It should have been judged as a 10-10 round by all the judges and the scorekeeper should have come out with scores of 40-36 and 39-37 on two of the cards. It was not Jason’s fault the Commission didn’t complete the job correctly
Erik Magraken@erikmagraken

@JohnMcCarthyMMA John, always appreciate your views. Under the unified rules was there any reason for Jason going through the motions of starting / stopping 4th round to get to technical decision? With 3 complete rounds in a 5 round fight weren’t they already there?

This Kattar/Zalal fight is exactly the reason why we will never have open scoring in the UFC.

Following UFC 311, I attended the commission's debrief with the referees and judges, which is typically not open to media. I detailed the experience and why it is so important that other commissions opt for this level of transparency in the future. sportsnet.ca/ufc/article/mo…

Fun fact - when the UFC first started they pretended to be santioned by a body called the IFC which they themselves invented. When did they stop this charade? Why did they stop this charade?
