No law enforcement agency will ever call you & tell you that you have warrants & request any type of payment. In today's world don't give payment info to anyone that calls or texts you first. You call them & submit payment info or physically type in a web address yourself. No links! My department is seeing a lot of scam activity right now with a lot of elderly victims. Thanks to Rep. Emily Randall for introducing the bipartisan FERRIES Act. We've made progress on fixing our ferry system by restoring full domestic service for the first time since 2019 and cutting down on canceled routes. However, our fleet is aging. Further investment from the federal government would be a true lifeline for us to continue the momentum that we’ve started.

REAL TALK: As a retired homicide detective, I've sat with too many grieving families including moms, dads, brothers, and sisters. All while they wipe away the tears, hearing their gut-wrenching screams and cries that never quite leave you. I've carried the weight of their pain long after the cases are closed and even the ones that stayed open. What I can't wrap my head around is why so many judges keep RELEASING multi convicted violent offenders back onto our streets. These aren't minor "slipups" rather dangerous predators with long records of destroying lives. I often wish those judges had to feel what I've seen firsthand: A mother's heartbreaking sobs for her son who was just walking home from school when his life was taken. The piercing screams of a daughter learning her mom was brutally r@ped and murdered. The quiet, crushing devastation of a father standing where his daughter was left to die alone in a park. Maybe then the scales of justice would finally tip toward protecting the innocent instead of coddling the guilty. Victims' families deserve better. Our communities deserve better.

This is excellent news. I appreciate the president approving a major disaster declaration for Washington state and approving funding. Thanks also to the bipartisan coalition of local, state and federal officials who worked hard to advocate for this approval. We appreciate the support, and will be following up with the federal government to get more information.

Yesterday, Governor Bob Ferguson signed Washington state’s first income tax into law. Voters rejected an income tax as recently as 2010. In 2024 they went further — passing Initiative 2111, which explicitly banned the state from enacting one. Democrats amended that ban and passed it anyway. 51-46 in the House. 27-22 in the Senate. Senate Bill 6346 imposes a 9.9% tax on household income above $1 million. The bill includes a “necessity clause” that blocks a public referendum. Opponents cannot put repeal to a vote. The Washington State Supreme Court ruled in 1933 that income is property and must be taxed uniformly. That precedent has stood for 93 years. Democrats didn’t pursue a constitutional amendment. Instead they redefined the tax as a levy on the “receipt” of income — not income itself — and are relying on a current court to accept the distinction. A lawsuit was filed the same day Ferguson signed it. Washington was already ranked 45th in state tax competitiveness. New Jersey introduced its income tax in 1976 with a 2.5% top rate. It is now 10.75%. Two years ago voters banned the income tax. Democrats wrote an exception into that ban, shielded it from referendum, and signed it anyway.

Important news for voting in Washington state: I recently signed 5 election-related bills, including to respond to federal efforts to access voter data. We established a state-level voting rights preclearance process for jurisdictions that have previously violated voting rights laws. We amended who can challenge a voter’s registration. We clarified the statute that information like a voter’s driver’s license number, Social Security number, or full birth date is confidential, and made unauthorized disclosure of private voter information a class C felony.  We strengthened coordination between elections offices and federally recognized Tribes. And we strengthened the Washington Voting Rights Act by clarifying how voting rights violations are addressed and resolved.
