🎩Sir Ken Robinson 🔥 An Elemental Reflection Part 1 Sir Ken Robinson would have turned 74 years old today. His life's work has made a major impact on my life's work and I want to spend a bit of time honoring him with some reflections.♥️ On page 79 of his book, "The Element," Sir Ken writes, "...there is far more to our minds than the deliberate processes of conscious though. Beneath the noisy surface of our minds, there are deep reserves of memory and association, of feelings and perceptions that process and record our life's experiences beyond our census awareness. So at time, creativity is a conscious effort. At others, we need to let our ideas ferment for a while and trust the deeper unconscious rumination of our minds, over which we have less control. Sometimes, when we do, the insights we've been searching for will come to us in a rush, like 'letting a cork out of a bottle.'" 🔴🔴🔴 Back in October, 2023, I was thrifting as I was making all kinds of items that I was sure people would love to buy as Christmas gifts at fairs and online. (This is another example of one of my fantastic failures in my business ventures, but I do like this story.) I was a Sr. Carmen, my favorite rebel-nun's thrift store, when I spotted two red tables. I believe they were $3 each. From the moment I saw them, I knew they were going to be my TED Tables. The tables were a little shabby so I picked up a sample of "No More Drama" red from the hardware store and put a fresh coat of paint on top. Just before this time, I began experimenting with mirror in mosaics and thought it had a really cool effect. Almost every mosaic I make these days includes 78's. (This is thanks to the failed farmer's market experience from the past summer when I tried to use them as signs and broke them. They break like glass if you didn't know.) For the TED Tables, I thought I would do one with a lightning bolt and the other a flame with a heart in it. I saw something similar with next year's CAGT logo and McDonald's sauce packet logo. What did Picasso, Jobs and Banksy say about copying, connecting...? It's all inspiration, really. Well, it was a bit of all that. And now I realize there's a flame on the cover of Sir Ken's book "The Element," so there's the why for that flame. The flame was turning out but the lightning was not taking shape. So I thought, I guess you don't want to be lightning and then I began rearranging glass. Mosaic making is very much like assembling a puzzle free form. After some reconfiguring, I realized, it was wanting to be... a fedora! The fedora is both in honor of Sir Ken and Amy, my sister in law whom we lost too soon. She was a hat connoisseur and was often spotted donning a fedora as was Sir Ken. 🧵1/2. cc @SirKenRobinson @KateRobinson89
