It's shed from the epithelium or feather follicles, some species produce more of it than others, and it is a significant mode of transmission of some viruses. See doi.org/10.1186/s13567…

"I was a show the other day which had an up-close bird encounter with volunteer/educational birds, this included healthy (flying) falcons and hawks. The birds were very dusty (many birds are) and the dust was everywhere..... I really really hope #H5N1 does not take off. Public services and health systems are absolutely not ready. Urgent Care turned me away, GP said I could stop by tomorrow with no real urgency, and @CDPH basically said they're not meant for general public and I shouldn't have called." The individual also called the local county public health dept. and: "....nobody really seemed to care." When shown photos of the first #H5N1 positive TX diary worker with conjunctivitis, they remarked that the appearance of their eyes was similar (subconjunctival hemorrhage, in other words, not just pink eye).
