@dillonliam Does he anticipate 2/3 of the Legislature placing it on the ballot? Or interest groups circulating initiative petitions soon after voters have voted on one or more other contentious tax issues?

Last Tuesday was California's 175th anniversary of statehood. Here's a thought: The State Assembly's committees in the first session (1850) and those of the present session (2025-26). Several remain while others split: Ways & Means became the Budget and Approps committees

@MichaelWWara Is it usual practice for federal (or other public) prosecutors to initiate litigation before the cause of the fire has been established. AFAIK CalFire hasn’t yet pointed the finger.

Negligence is a very strong claim for the cause of this fire. Did SCE leave a transmission line in place that it could have removed? Yes. Was that decision overseen by multiple state agencies and was SCE doing a ton of other work to reduce risk. Also yes. justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/u…

Spent the past four hours watching the parole hearing of Hillside Strangler Kenneth Bianchi. Very emotional day for the families of his victims, several of whom attended and provided statements. Parole denied. Next hearing will be in 10 years, when Bianchi is 84.

Thanks everyone for reaching out about the fires. I’m safe w/my kids at the beach. I have so many homeless friends and so many family memories in the palisades. I grew up in LA and this never happens. If you want to do something for me make climate change your top voting priority

@BeschlossDC I was in 2nd grade and in my school cafeteria in San Diego. Somebody made an announcement; we were pretty confused but knew something was wrong. Shortly after (many of) our moms picked us up. My dad had to go to Dallas that afternoon - I didn’t see him for several days.

@Sammy_Roth @carbonplanorg We need to get out of this business if only so that we can focus on taking the meaningful steps needed to preserve communities and ecosystems that are in harms way. That means putting intentional and beneficial fire on the ground. Impossible where there are offsets.

Well then: Of the 400,000+ acres burned in the Park fire, "about 43,000 of those acres are forests that were supposed to stay intact for at least 100 years under California’s carbon offset program," per @carbonplanorg analysis. politico.com/newsletters/ca…

COLUMN: "Walz could teach California liberals how to advance progressive policies in a state where Democrats in the legislature hold a slim edge. And he could show them how to appeal to rural voters," writes @joegarofoli. trib.al/evrwpH0

@AlexCVassar The baller move would be to veto a bill you voted against.

Alternatively, the same could happen if the Lt. Governor were to cast a tie-breaking vote in the State Senate and then sign the bill if the Governor was absent.
Loren Kaye@KayeLoren

@AlexCVassar @SenToniAtkins So strange that a legislator can sign a bill he voted for.

The most underappreciated story in state legislatures from yesterday is that apparently the Oklahoma Department of Education can't log in to its own website because the person who had the password left and didn't give it to anyone. They haven't been able to login for 2 years.
Heartland Signal@HeartlandSignal

OK state legislators torch State Superintendent Ryan Walters (R) for losing federal funding for schools and being locked out of his own Department of Education website for years: "So just for clarity, you do not have access to your website, to update your website?" "Correct."

If Lou Reed knew they'd be playing VU's "I'm Waiting for My Man" at the Beverly Hills Erewhon in 2024 while patrons eat $28 take-out smashburgers, maybe he'd have had less of a chip on his shoulder? A bigger chip?
